Well, supposed to be heading out to elk camp tomorrow but this blizzard is putting a big damper on things. Not only are we going to have to fight the snow to get there, but now the mercury's going to bottom out next week. I keep saying "no more" to these January freeze hunts but for some reason I keep applying. One of these years I'll finally get a shot at one and it'll finally have been all worth it! Anyone else heading out for late season elk in Manitoba?

Good Luck and bring a ski-doo to drag it out.We were fortunate enough back in 97 when I shot my elk the warden checked our licences and offered to drag the elk back to the truck. The cold and snow should get them out and on the fields. What area you hunting? We tried Onanole (Tagged on a antlerless bull moose and a elk) for 3 seasons and Erikson for a season (all we seen were tracks). They were moving at night and back into the park by sun up.

My hunting partner and myself are going for a ride in about 1 hr to check a few different spots for tomorrow morning. I keep telling myself that with all the snow and cold we have right now the bull season is looking better and better. I'm hoping I can hunt moose again one day soon in our local zone and I can skip elk hunting.

I got to the spot we were planning on hunting and there were 40 - 50 elk on the land we where going to hunt on. There was even some in the landowners shelterbelt when we went to his yard to talk with him. He signed our premission slips and wished us good luck and we where on our way. we were feeling pretty good about our chances and then about 2-30 this afternoon the landowner phones me and says after we left there was some people out on the land with snowmobiles trying to chase the elk on to land they have permission on. He phoned MNR and the RCMP to tell them what was happening and then had to go to town. On his way home a truck tried to run him off the road so when he got home he phoned the RCMP to inform them of this. He then told me to still come out hunting in the morning but to expect alot of natural resouce officers and maybe some RCMP in the area. We will be doing everything legal and ethical but who knows if the elk are even in the area. I'm now starting to regret even more for applying for this elk season but I will let you know how it turns out in the morning.
