Offhand shots. What would you use ?

Read the attitude Foxer!
Your not going to teach this guy anything
He already knows it all :D
It's a point, Foxer.:(
My offhand shooting tends to be out of necessity i.e. that bunny won't stay where is if I walk further over the rise and there's nowhere for me to sit or lay without long grass being a factor.
Or perhaps the truck I'm standing on the back of is idling and vibrating like crazy and resting on the cab roof would be ineffective.
Interestingly in the heat of the moment my offhand is sometimes more reliable than rested.
Perhaps it's a gritting of the teeth and the realisation you just have to do it the hard way and you just slip into it.
Mind you I've had spectacular misses too on admittedly small targets so don't mistake me as some sort of guru.

While I prefer to use a rest of some sort whenever it is available, I have no qualms about taking an offhand shot at game out to my self-imposed limit for such shots. Running game gets a nod also, but some running game is a true challenge, like a muley when it is "stolting" I will usually pass on those. As long as a person is practised and sure of a lethal hit, these shots are ethical IMHO. Of course, offhand and running shots are always allowed when the game has already been wounded, and is trying to make an escape. Regards, Eagleye.

Pretty funny thread!!! All my bow killed game animals have been shot offhand... Rabbits, deer, ducks, grouse, am going after a bear this spring. I find that offhand with the rifle to 100 yards is not unreasonable, especially after the bowhunt. Last year's bruin was shot offhand at 70 yards with my Ruger .300 WM. My whitetail was shot offhand with my Mauser 6.5X55, 90 yards. In the military we used to shoot lot's of rounds offhand at man size targets and it was never a problem. what's the big deal???

Trotuseeker

exactly my point as well Troutseeker, what do archers do the prone position ? LMAO

sometimes guys its best to look back on your days in the field and laff at new guys with there holier than thow attitudes, but then remember we were all new web users at 1 time and had egos that had to be broken down before we became civil ;)

He probably could have worded his opinion differently however if he's going to throw down a gauntlet that big perhaps he should be prepared to defend his position.
