I'm now the owner of a Stag Arms AR15 from TSE, with an Ergo grip, ARMS #40L low profile rear BUIS, slimmer front sight pin, all dressed in nice matte OD furniture. WOOOOHOOOO!

During the newbie orientation of field stripping etc., the topic of barrel break in came up.

I know how to carefully break-in a CroMoly or Stainless barrel in a bolt action; is there anything different I need to know about the Chrome lined barrel on this badass rifle? What about other areas of break-in for an AR... anything I should know?

Next question; I'm terrible with irons on a rifle, any rifle, period. I improved my performance on my lever guns with a rear aperture, very similar to the one on the Stag. Meanwhile, I'm trying to locate either an ACOG TA31, or an Elcan Specter DR.

In the meantime, is there a better/more visibly/more easily contrasted to target front post I should try? The XS one in stock at TSE has a white line, but seems fatter than the slim post I had put in, ergo would obscure more of the target.

I was also shopping for a shotgun, but they didn't have quite that something that I had a taste for. So I settled for a nice compact Surefire E2E as well.

I put a few rounds through the rifle, and then headed out to WSS for some rifle reloading stuff.

Hey, what's that on the shelf? Can I see it? Hmm, how much? OK, do it. :D

That thing on the shelf happened to be a Remington 870 Tactical Magnum, equipped with a cool Knoxx Industries Spec-Ops stock. Amazingly enough, the recoil taming Knoxx unit comes from Remington with an "R3" recoil pad, although in this case it's actually labeled 'Limbsaver' LOL

I'm thinking the shotgun should have a red dot sight of some kind... suggestions? I also think I'll be switching the front bead for a night sight of some type.

Here are the pics, and I've included a couple of my Kimber Stainless TLE/RLII with the Surefire X200B as well. The 870 will be wearing a Docter Optic starting tomorrow, and as for the AR, I think a trigger swap with bigger trigger guard, an optic as discussed, and who knows what else?

Break in procedure for an AR is as follows: Transport rifle to range observing all applicable laws. Carefully load 5 rounds into the magazine (10 rounds if you have trick RRA 'pistol' mags from Questar), aim the rifle, pull the trigger 5 (10) times aiming between shots- and fiddling with sights. Repeat until ammunition box(es) is/are empty. Go home and clean rifle (Otis kit is great) repeat whole procedure as often as time and wallet allow.

OKOKOKOKOK! I'm headed back to TSE today (rifle's still there 'till the CFO goes to work on Monday) so I'll take some pics and post 'em up this afternoon!

As for the EoTech, I'm sold on the idea of a sight with somewhat better long range capability. Therefore, this rifle will wear either a Spectre DR or an ACOG.

The boys at TSE did a hell of a job trying to convince me I needed an Aimpoint though. I'll give 'em all an A+ for relentlessness there! LOL

Another sight along the same lines as the two you are looking at is the US Optics SN4, 1-4x- all the usual USO bells and whistles (reticles, knobs, filters). The US retail is about $1200. HWSNBN was carrying USO.
 
Aside from being stamped "tactical magnum" and having a knoxx copstock, what makes the tac mag any different than a parked 870 express with a knoxx and a choate steel mag extension?

Possibly nothing, except that it would be more expensive to piece one together with an Express.

I'll try to pull the pics and resize them :eek:
 
If you suck with irons, the solution isn't to buy an optic. Go out and practice with the irons, once you're competent THEN buy the optic.
