Lol so I'm watching "shelock holmes: a game of shadows" and they pull out a mauser broom handle... And they describe it right "a pistol with a 10 round box magazine" but then.... They load it from the bottom, lol, and later in the movies, they carry what too me looks like a mosin with a mauser type wing saftey on the rear of the bolt, and looks like it has a springfield rear sight, anyone help identify the rifle?

As soon as I saw those rifles I though it was a mosin to but wouldn't it maybe be a gew 88? It would be right for the time frame of the movie I think.

Just googled it and found this.Look for the picture of the gew 88 and read before and after it, it seems we aren't the only ones who though they Fed up a bit.

I went to watch this movie to see the Gewehr 88s being used. There is one slow motion scene in the movie that clearly shows a close up of the receiver and the operation of the bolt.

I don't agree with the author of the internet article bashing the Gewehr 88 though, they are magnificent rifles and very accurate. There is plenty of period photographs of Gewehr 88s in multiple service roles from training, guard duty, and front line combat. Oh well, not everyone's cup of tea I suppose ;).

3:08, you can see a round being fed. Looks like a lead bullet to me though I can't see the en-bloc clip. Keep in mind, this is Hollywood :).

What are you trying to say Nabs, Hollywood ON OCCASION may stretch the truth and exaggerate facts? Shame on you!:evil:

Also, Mk VII .303 used in the m.g. that would not have existed then, detatchable mag c96 (must have beena pre-production expirimental model) ;)
The poison dart thingy made from a .223 rem marked casing

I really didn't care for that film. I'm a bit of a Sherlock Holmes nut and while I enjoyed the first film as a novelty, the second one is a lasting detriment to the Holmes mythology. But that's a discussion for another board.

The firearms were acceptable, I suppose. The Broomhandle was an anachronism, but intentionally so. They really did use the mags wrong. At one point, Holmes is tossed a clip of 30 mauser. The concept of a stripper clip is too much for a popcorn audience, I guess. God forbid a Sherlock Holmes movie be an exercise in thoughtfulness.

But it's fun to see antique Webleys and Gew 88s in action. I just wish they'd paid more attention to Holmes himself.

Watched the film last night on the telly
I just can't see the current actor as Holmes. I prefer Basil Rathbone or Jeremy Brett. AND Nigel Bruce fit the role of Watson perfectly.
