On the outside, this MacNaughton hammer gun looked in quite good condition aside from a hairline crack....

Should be back home following rehab in a week or so.

Well that's unfortunate. Was a very pretty piece of wood.

A double shotgun, especially one with sidelocks like that, have very little wood in the structure and a hairline crack can be worse than it looks.
I've currently got 2 muzzleloader double shotguns that I dare not fire until re-enforcing cracks near the lockwork. Winter projects....

Sure hope yours can be made whole again!

Yes, also supporting the case for storing guns muzzle-down. I expect that Chris rebuilt the head with new wood.

I used to swear by this practice until the day about 10 years ago when I put my new Marlin XL 7 30-06 away without knowing the cat had peed on the foam inside the cabinet when I wasn't looking. I put 5-10 rounds through that gun that day and not one since. I can't even bring myself to look at it. 1/2" of muzzle inside and out completely rusted and pitted. It sat in the urine for a week before I took it out and noticed. Those 10 rounds were and are the only rounds fired in that rifle to this day

John, that’s a sad looking stock. So sorry. And while you have lots of your own experience with Chris, take a good look at Brian’s Lang. It was a disaster of emense proportions and Chris did work magic on it.

Now that made me laugh....probably not so much for you though....

I would have fired one more

How much oil is a person this happens to putting in a barrel? I always oil after cleaning, but run a dry patch to swab the excess, and have never seen any trace of oil on the bolt/action face.

Exactly. I think some people get a little squeeze-happy with the oil. Seen some that I thought were slathered in cosmoline but were just coated in oil.
