I did a search and it is funny because everyone seems to have a somewhat unique problem with rings and scope but they all seem to work it out in the thread. Cool really

Anyhow I just bought an awesome Savage in 7X57 and it came with weaver bases. Now I plan on getting either a Leupold 3X9X40 or a Bushnel Elite 4200 2.5X10X40. So first the scope question as I have never owned either of these optics.

what is the biggest difference between the VX I and the VX II ? I was going to go with the VX II automatic but whne reading about the VX I I did not see much that set the two apart ??

Then during my search I found a few threads in which people gvae the Bushnell Elite 4200 rave reviews ? So are they as good as the Leupold ??

I guess given my price range how do these compare the Zeiss Conquest 3X9X40 ??

So my final question is about rings. Does leupold make rings to fit with the weaver bases ? It seems the Burris does are they any good ? What about height ? Is Med the standard ? My Tikka has optilok rings and as far as I know they only came in one height.

Alot to consider here and I appreciate any and all help. I have never done it but I plan to mount and bore sight the scope myself.

i can't comment on the rings, but as to those 2 scopes, they were the 2 i was looking at for my .223 bolt gun, and i ended up going with the leupold vxII 3-9x40.

i looked at both scopes side by side in the store and couldn't tell much of a difference clarity wise, although i did find it slightly quicker and easier to get a full sight picture with the bushnell 4200, but what settled it for me in the end was 2 things, the warranty and the light weight of the leupold, the 4200 was only a few ounces heavier, but it just felt like it was so much more:)

btw, leupold's website should clarify the difference between the 2 model lines.

Both are pretty good scopes but the Ziess is clearer, Leupold has the best warranty, ring height depends on obj. diameter of scope, and yes both Burris and leupold make good rings that will fit on weaver bases, including quick release(Leupold).

Fully muti-coated lens and click adjustments on the VX-11, single coating and friction adjustments on the VX-1. Quite a difference, really.

stick with the VXII great scopes and if it's your first time mounting a scope be careful be very careful you don't overtighten the rings and bend an expensive scope tube and will you need to lapp the rings?? now thats a whole different ball game and a whole new topic-------------but buy the leupold you can't go wrong..

Well this helps for sure, because when reading the description in the WSS catalog it doesn't sound like much.

Well I have not had any other scope ring lapped so why now ? Thanks for the tip about the tightening.

Its been said before, you can’t go wrong with either scope. I have both and I believe you will find the Bushnell clearer in low light situations but it is 4oz heavier. I’ve never had to use it but the word is that Leupolds warrantee is unbeatable. My advice would be to go to the store and look through them both and decide which one looks best to you.
As for rings....I’m not a big fan of taking the rings off my guns but Leupold does have the Quick release rings. My recommendation would be for PRW rings. I have them and have had no problem. Mine are low rings and attached to my Bushnell 4200 40mm objective and I have lots of clearance.
Good luck

In a reply from Leupold to an email, (going from memory here...) they noted that the VX-I is rated at about 88% light transmission, while the VX-II is about 92%, and the VX-III is closer to 95%. Also, I think the VX-I has 1/2" adjustments, while the VX-II has 1/4".

IMHO, I think the 4200 Elite is the better scope, rated at 95%. Additionally it has the Rainguard feature. On several occasions now my Leupold VX-III, in sub-freezing temperatures, has immediately fogged up on me from breath hitting the lens upon sighting on a deer. Just a tad inconvenient! Meaning damn maddening!!! I understand from Elite owners that this doesn't happen with Rainguard.

I also think the 4200 Elites optics are, especially for the considerably lower price, very excellent. Very sharp and clear.

If I could start over, I'd go with the Elite 4200 or 6500 over my Leupold VX-III 4.5x14X40.

As for rings, I only use Burris Signatures. No lapping required, no risk...if properly installed...of torquing and/or bending the scope. And I lean towards the Weaver style system. If I can't find the Weaver Grand Slam steel bases, then I'd go with the Leupold steel version. IMHO, a lot stronger and better looking then the Weaver aluminum.

FWIW.

I thihk you're right about the VX1 adjustments being 1/2 MOA. I mounted a Rifleman for a friend and while it's a decent scope, I'd spend the extra money for teh VX3 myself. Interesting comment about lens fogging. I've never used a Bushnell with Rain Guard up here (or anywhere else) so I can't comment, but I agree that errant breathing can cause irreparable fogging in cold weather (especially if you're out at -30 or worse). I'm always very conscious of my breathing to avoid that problem. I find that if you keep your mouth shut (meaning breathe through your nose, not STFU:D) the problem is a non-issue.

Whoe....I did not expect anyone to say this. My problem is that unless I go to Vancouver or Vernon ( not too far but I am not sure of they sell Leupold) I can't look through both of these scopes, especailly not at the same store. I hope to find a scope in the exchange form maybe but if not where should I buy ? Wholesale, Cabelas ...???

I didn't think Leupold made rings that fit my weaver bases but I will look at these PRW and Burris rings.

i just checked with the leupold website, and the rifleman series have 1/2" friction adjustments, while the vx-I has 1/4" friction, and the vx-II have 1/4" click type.

bushnell 6500's are very nice scopes, especially for their price point, i used to own 2 of them in 2.5-16x40, but have since sold both as i went the lightweight path with my hunting rifles, and those scopes didn't fit the bill.

I have the vx-1,vx-2,vx-111,and a zeiss conquest, all are good scopes for their price! As for breathing on your scope when it is minus 30,not a very good thing to do.I have binoculars with raingaurd and it will fog when breathed on, Looking through scopes in a store does not really give you any idea how they will perform in hunting conditions either. The friction adjustments on the vx-1 may be calibrated in 1/2moa increments but you can move them less, they are friction adjustments, not "click".I would take a good look at the conquest as their prices have come down a bit lately!

Edited, I see you're in Kelowna. There's no good sporting shops there???

Wholesale Sports has new store in Kamloops, bit of a drive for sure. They're probably as competitive as any, as far as stores go. Definitely will have both Leupolds and Bushnell on the shelves. For some reason Burris Signature rings are not in everyone's inventory, but Wholesale generally have 'em.

I have to go to Del's to get a 7X57 case length gage and a couple of shell holders so I will look there for both scopes.
If I can find burris stuff I am going to go with rings and bases otherwise I am starting to think I will buy Leupold bases and rings and take off the weaver bases.

I would suspect that if I buy a Leupold VXII 3X9X40 and then get Leupold bases and low rings that it would be a pretty nice set up and not too hard to install and bore sight myself ??

Once I get this all set up I will post a pic of the gun as it is sweet.
