hey,

just trying to figure out how long it would take to drive to Ottawa from Toronto via highway 7. I can make it to PFGA in about 2h from Toronto, allowing for traffic, how long from there to Ottawa/RA Centre on highway 7? Keeping the speed at max 90km/h... ?

Thanks a lot!

Why the 7 and so slow?
G2 only?
401 to 416 is a little over 4 hours.
Taking the 7 can take 5-5 1/2 hours depending on how many slow buggers you get stuck behind.

90 kph? are you kidding me? how long did it take me in your car from Barrie to Toronto, like an hour max? Put the foot to the floor and let the engine take over dude!

With your G2 you can drive on 400 series highways, its only for the G1 that it states "You must not drive on roads with a posted speed limit over 80 km/h including the 400-series highways, the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW), the Don Valley Parkway (DVP), the Gardener Expressway, the E. C. Row Expressway, and the Conestoga Parkway in Kitchener-Waterloo. However, if your accompanying driver is a driving instructor licensed in Ontario, you may drive on any road."

It would be about 3 hours with traffic...

I always take # 7 from Ottawa to Peterborough for the matches...but I would do 416 to 401 for Toronto.

#7 is a nice drive in the summer and fall...if you're not in a hurry...

Highway 7 is 80kph...and lot's of OPP...95 kph tops or you will get nailed

Ya what Quigley said I know I got nailed on my way home to Peterborough from Smith Falls. Lots of OPP. The Peterborough match dates will be up on the web site soon , so some of us can plan on doing two matches in one day. Ive never done that but I think that would be a blast. Maybe if I'm not MD and secondwind is not we will give it a try

Yeah, here too, but it's the other way for me - go to PFGA in the morning and grenville in the afternoon. makes for a bit of a long drive day, but that's ok, I found that this add no more than 2h to the whole day's driving, which is great. Then, haha, we can meet up for dinner somewhere half way between the two, meeting the Ottawa crew coming back... So, if you guys (PFGA & Grenville) can coordinate matches on the same day, it makes it great!)

Re directions - yet, I know all that (re 401 is faster, etc), there is a reason why I'm looking at highway 7 (yes, G1). Just wanted to make sure we'd be able to get there in time (leave Toronto at 6am, will make to to the RA centre in time to shoot at noon). I'll drive to peterboro, that's about 160km, mostly 110-115km/h, then we'll alternate with the G1. Should be ok, unless we get really unlucky re traffic, in which case we'll be late a bit... ;)

Toronto to Ottawa Hwy 7 90km Winter = 5 hrs. +

If You Wanna Live Longer: Avoid Hwy 7 EH!

I have returned to Peterboro' after a long absence after having lived in NWOntario and Hwy11/17 land for 30 years.

To the point, HWY 7 is really HWY 11/17 Only it is in Southern Ontario.

Two lanes most of the way and BIG Trucks who really do OWN the road...

in 2003 I started driving back and forth on Hwy 7 to visit my son in Ottawa..after three years of motorcycle and car commutes..my chosen route to Stay In One Piece is to drive south from Peterboro to Port Hope and 401 then to Ottawa.

Same for my son. His closest brush with the grim reaper was a deer collision plua several speeding tickets that would NOT be issued on other "Highways"..dare I say 401?

Yes it does take longer but there are only about four stoplights between Peterboro and Ottawa via the Bensfort Road-Bailieboro-Port Hope 401 then to Ottawa connection.

There is, shall we say, a "variable speed limit" on 401. Guess the massive 401 multiple collision and two deaths one of a good semaritan trying to help oothers at the initial accident scene recently illustrates my point unfortunately.

Go over 85 kph per hour on Hwy 7 and you will HAVE a ticket..sooner versus later.

Also missing on the 401 route to Ottawa versus Hwy 7 are NO large transport trucks forcing you off the road in the winter so he/she can avoid a head on collision. Thats what happened to me in winter 2004. The transport driver passed three cars behind me then forced me off the road. I do remember looking at his/her face in the little window low down on the right hand door in the split second I decided to drive off onto the shoulder versus get "bunted off" as he/she sounded his horn for me to "move over and off the road" at 85kph or so.

Only reason I am writing this after that well remembered hwy 7 "misadventure by Highway 7 Design" is that I drove in WINTER Conditions on Hwy 11/17 for 30 years...

Yes on 401 route Peterboro to Ottawa there are No near misses from oncoming cars or T Bone events from ALL the intersections on Hwy 7..

How many intersections are there on Hwy 7 anyway? Try it on a motorcycle sometime!

After talking to one expert who allowed that the certain portions of Hwy 7 "attracted accidents'" on a regular basis I have decided that it just isnt worth it to Drive On Hwy 7 to "Arrive Alive"..DUH!

Hmm a slogan for a Highway..that encourages you to "Arrive Alive"..Now there is a Clue as to its "design"..

We can only wonder what the accident statistics are on this Hwy 7 stretch of road from Ottawa to Peterboro..

Yesterday the Peterboro Examiner announced a LOT of improvements on Hwy 7, Hmmm wonder why?

I first drove Hwy 7 from Peterboro to Ottawa in 1960.

The most amazing thing is that almost 47 years later Hwy 7 HAS NOT CHanged all that much! Sure there are three lanes in places or widening but then the TRAFFIC IS HUGE for a predominantly TWO LANE Highway.

Time Is Money..and also a consideration in Commuting..

Ok, I've been warned away from highway 7, haha, - how about taking highway 15 from Kingston to Ottawa, as opposed to taking the 401 futher to 416 ?

I'm not looking for an estimate which one will be faster or easier, I'm looking for any strongly negative comments people might have about highway 15 (similar to the whole trucks/etc thing about highway 7, posted above)... Thanks! (this would be tomorrow (Sat), I'm guessing between 9-11am).

Thanks!

In the 70's all the "experts" were saying that we would have fying cars by the year 2000. Well, where the hell is my flying car? It was promised to me; I waited, and seven years later it's still not here. This isn't right!

Can someone get on this? Maybe Steven Harper can do something. That would render all traffic congestion irrelevant.

Nobody should take 5-5 1/2 hours taking hwy 7 unless you stop at Tim's for coffee and a dump every time you see one. OR it is a big winter storm, which will add time no matter WHICH way you go. Nobody notice the huge winter pile-ups that happen between Port Hope and Kingston every year?

Having made this trip approximately 200 times I can tell you I have taken hwy 7 to 15 to 401 to T.O. - hwy 7 to 35/155 to 401 to T.O. -The 416 down to 401 to T.O. and a dozen other routes and they all take roughly the same time... in fact my best times have ALWAYS been taking hwy 7. (There are more passing lanes now then there used to be, though I did manage 2 hours 45 minutes in 1994 in my '69 Mustang.)

Going only 10-18 kph over the limit and ALWAYS watching for speed traps, PARTICULARILY in the PERTH area... you can be at the 35/115 from Ottawa in less then 3 hours. Then less then 1/2 an hour to the 401... then 1/2 hour to T.O. so 4- 41/2 hours tops.

If there is bad weather or alot of traffic/long weekend take hwy 7 to 15 to 401 if you must.

As everyone mentions, watch your speed or match the other drivers speeds keeping a safe distance, and drive safe... hwy 7 is definitely not a super safe road by any means... again it is the lack of skill on the part of many drivers that makes it this way.

Then again... if everybody stops taking Hwy7 it'll be better for me. HA! I suggest everyone takes the 416 to 401.
