Well, the utterly flamboyant and "Don't-ask-don't-tell" CyaN1de let the cat out of the bag by posting pictures of his outstanding clear coat work on my stock, here are pics of it after final assembly.

This is a 6.5-08 "Habu" which is a modified 260. It was designed and perfected by US F-Class shooter, Ron Hermes. (292 neck, .264 throat and optimized for the 142 SMK)

This nifty gun was another masterpiece by precision gun builder Mick McPhee.

It boasts...

* Remington XP100 Action (trued)
* Sinclair bolt release
* Custom Aluminum heavy trigger guard
* McPhee heavy recoil lug
* Krieger 6.5mm 1:8 twist barrel in #17A contour (28" with 1" muzzle)
* Jewell 1.5oz BR trigger
* Ken Farrel 20 MOA base with Ken Farrel 30mm rings
* Leupold 8.5-25X50 LRT with fine target dot
* Carl Bernosky F-Class Prone stock in Psychedelic laminate
- 6 way butt plate
- Anschutz rail
- Glass pillar bedded
- Clear coated by Liberace (CyaN1de)

Believe it or not, this 20 pound, single shot bolt actioned rifle is a RESTRICTED firearm. The XP-100 action was from a pistol and as such, our utterly obtuse laws state that once a pistol, ALWAYS a pistol and it cannot be re-classified. Not a real big deal, but it is a testament to our utterly stupid gun laws.

Range report to follow!

PS: Excluding bipod and scope, the total cost for this build (Mind you, CyaN1de has not billed me yet...) was under 2K... Custom guns need not break the bank.

Nice Rifle.
It interesting our laws have changed. I was talking with a woman at a shoot I went to a couple weeks ago, she had built her own rifle and it was on a sleeved xp-100 action. I asked her about the restricted/non restricted issue she had done it prior to C-68, no problems. Very stupid indeed.

Was that one of those 90% finished stocks? How long did it take to finish it out to that degree? I would also be interested to know what the smith charges to true the action, install the barrel and finish/bed the stock to keep the cost under 2k for this rig.

As for the pistol status that is insanity at it's finest....

Yes, 90% inlet. Took Art Bourne a day to complete the work and bed it. Took another day for Richard to clear coat.

Here is the break-down of cost:

Action $250
Truing: Case of beer (it only required lug lapping) Smithing (inc lug)$350
Trigger $275
Base: $110
Barrel: $400 CDN (My cost)
Stock (inc trigger guard and butt plate) : $600

I did forget the bedding - $125

Would it have cost much more if you had used a real rifle action?

Well, an SPS sells for ~600 and you can sell off the barrel and trigger. Not much difference in the end.

Ian, that is a great looking rig with a nice bold stock. Sure looks comfy to shoot. I bet it shoots just fine with Mick doing the install and the components used.

Are you going with a Kydex or Leather holster?

you can't shoot it in the gopher fields. :eek::bsFlag:

I guess you will have to check ahead to ensure that the F class range you are shooting at is approved for restricted firearms. Need an ATT to transport. Report in/permit when leaving the province. Would need a lock vault in the hotel room. All that joy and fun.

Now that is stupid laws at its finest.

Enjoy...

Jerry

I'm sure there is some way to prove that the restricted firearm was destroyed and re-register this one.

I'd still treat it as a non-restricted. I guess you'd get in big poop if it ever got stolen though.

It's more satifying making a mockery of these incredibly asinine and pedantic firearms laws by telling everyone the truth than it is to commit an offense against the criminal code or the Firearms act and play into their hands.

Send the pic of it to the CFC, you'd think they would understand that it is in no way a handgun (mention how heavy the SOB is )

You and I understand that, but it has nothing to do with "understanding". The CFC employees have no discretion, lattitude or common sense at their disposal. The law (as retarded as it is) is the law. Nothing short of an order in council will change this and trust me, nobody gives a $hit enough to do anything to make this change.

Very nice project, Jerry. Neat to read stories on these fine custom builds.
Thanks for sharing the details. Looking forward to stories from the range.
