Was visiting the FIL yesterday, and he pulls out this 12g double and asks me if I know anything about it (I didn't). It is marked JP sauer & sohns, and is one of the prettiest doubles I've seen. The reciever is case hardened steel engraved with ducks on one side and pheasants on the other , the barrels are gloss blued and the wood is walnut (of course)

Can anybody provide any info on these guns? Age, value, quality?

Thanks!

Ryan

Marked on the table or the barrel flats will be a number such as "357" or "1062". This is the date code, with month and year - therefore "357" is March, 1957 and "1062" is October, 1962.

From the brief description it sounds like a Sauer Royal (if it has ejectors and was made post WWII) or a Model 60 if it is equipped with extractors. These are good quality guns (pre WWII is better) with decent balance and pointability.

There are a good many grades of Sauer, so have someone familiar with the line look at it, or post some pics here. If it is one of the above mentioned grades, depending on condition they trade about the $1K mark.

Look again for proof marks and numbers with the barrels removed from the action. Simply remove the fore end, open the gun and the barrels will come off. Look at the underside of the barrels, and on the action flats. You will find more info to go by.
