OK Now We've Solved The Brass Problem...Let's Wildcat !!

I really like it, IMHO it would have been dandy if Ruger would have went with an entire line based on this modern and sensible case design, and include the 257,270,7mm,308,338,358,416 as well.

Not a lot of shoulder there to headspace on...

Funny, I was just thinking about a .404 ruger this aft.

Actually 9.3, If I went this way I would go for a 40 deg shoulder, and in your hand it feels like there's lots, much more than appears in the photo. Measurements confirm about twice the amount of a belted case. If a person was careful making cases and setting dies for loading I think it would be fine. There is certainly enough to prevent firing pin movement.

I can already hear the cries and whimpers of the Luddites defending thier old favorites!! :)

.404 Ruger is a sheet of paper from the already extant .416 Ruger (.423" vs .416"), nobody I know can tell you the difference between a 400gr .416 and a 400g .404 if tossed at them. :) I wouldn't try and reinvent that wheel, but this .458 is pretty interesting. Appears to have plenty of shoulder to my eyes for headspace, neat.

Ah Cleftwynd, forget the 270.........think 6.5 or 7mm the 30s are done to death already, but 323 for sure, 338, and how about a 358 and the 366 would be cool too. The 366 could completly replace the 375 Imp (oster) and then on to the 458.......I think somebody already did the 416.........

Would a 6mm ruger be kinda like the old 244 Holland Holland with out the belt performance wise?

Back on track how did u get Winchester 416 ruger brass to neck up? Or am I missing something as I didn't think Winchester loaded the new ruger ammo

The NEW KING case has lots going for it necked up and down as the superfluous belt is removed, and there is a bit more case capacity than a standard 300WM/7RM/338WM et, and uses a standard size action, without getting into the larger case territory like the RUM's and 378 weatherbys. As with the NEW KING itself, it's an excellent balance. At one time I thought about having a set of rifles built with necked up and down 375 wildcats to compliment my NEW KING, but then I snapped out of it and remembered my disdain for most wildcats. :)

People interested in 375 Ruger wildcats should do a bit of googling. Rick Bin from 24hr campfire made his 338 Campfire several years ago, it's probably the most well known. But there are 6.5's, 7mms,30's, 9.3's, 45's and probably a bunch more. When the NEW KING was introduced several years ago, avid wildcatters jumped on the "new" case and necked it up and down, as wildcatters like to do.

Might save anyone interested in this sort of project some time and give them an idea of where to source reamers and dies.

We have many 6.5's, 7 mm's, 30's, 338's, 375's etc....the imposter brass is ideal for those that are excellent calibers that fill the gaps, 277, 323, 366 etc... and of course a nice big bore like the 458!!!

I see no need to attempt to immitate another cartridge that would still outperform the new imposter, use the brass to fill a gap or a need!!

See your point, and even the 9.3 may be redundant for me, as I've already got the 9.3X300 WM..........but I do like the look of the 458 and I really think a 35 would be interesting. This bore has been ignored almost completely and yet it is one of the killingest calibers I've used. The 350 RM and 358 Norma guys out there know what I'm talking about.

Good points Doug! I never thought of the 358, that would probably make a nice round, one day I might play with a wildcat or two again...
