Okay Now What? A 44mag or 45 long colt?

I have a Colt Third Gen. SAA in 44 Special...
Authentic...but a just a little different.
I would go with 45LC...very versatile...can be loaded mild for yucks, but is pretty close, if not equal, to 44 Mag. when throttled up.

When throttled up it's equal to the .44 but with about 30% less pressure, and you're delivering it with a fatter bullet!

this is a good question & both are fantastic cartridges.
either one will get the job done, which ever it might be.

the gun in the center is a .44 mag....

here is a ruger black hawk convertable (.45 colt/acp)

if you don't reload opting for the .44 mag would be the choice
simply because .44 mag ammo should be easier to come by, at least here it is.
you can also shoot the .44 special cartridge which is a throttled down .44 mag in shorter brass.

if you do reload then it really doesn't matter, but you must purchace a very strong gun like a ruger to be able to throttle up to the higher pressure rounds to match the performance of the .44 magnum.

which ever one you choose will be a great choice, but i will bet before long you will be thinking about the other. if you are like most of us, being addicted to the large calibres is a fun/good thing....:dancingbanana:

happy trails my friend!

Gunslinger,....you should show a picture of that perty "acusport bisley" again for us to drooool over,....Please! :)

Oh man soo many things to consider I like them both, poblem is I can only afford one :(

Both calibers are easily reloadable. What are you going to use it for? Hunting? Self Defence? Cowboy Action? There are more bullet choices in .44 if your interested in things other that Cowboy Action. What does your local supplier have available? Are you going to buy a pistol caliber carbine to go with it? Many questions before we can respond.

The 45 will only equal the 44 mag in Ruger (or equally strong) revolvers. You cannot safely load up a Colt or clone SAA in 45 to those pressures (or a S&W, if you were wondering). In a Ruger though, the 45 will do everything the 44 will do, with heavier bullets and make bigger holes. - dan

After much thought and thanks for all of your advice everyone. I have decided on the 45 long colt in a Ruger Blackhawk. The 50th anniversary Ruger flattop 44 mag was tempting, however the 45 long colt is a classic and someday I might try Cowboy action.
