A neighboor of mine offered me a couple of cases of .22 rds. Yuppie!! Unfortunately they are at least 10 yrs old if not more. I tested a box did not have any problems except for extra unburnt powder flying out when firing. Any thoughts??? Should I be worried???

I do no usually fuss about old ammo but something is making me feel uneasy.

I'm still shooting itty, bitty groups with 22 rimfire ammo that is well over 10 years old. Bought up a decent supply of a particularly accurate lot # and have been using it only for serious matters. Still works just fine. Yours should be OK as long as storage conditions were decent. Regards, Eagleye.

Depends how old. I've found that old boxes of Imperial usually have problems with the brass splitting. My buddy has had the same trouble. I had to throw them out.
I'm shooting some old boxes of RWS with no problem.
If they work OK, don't worry and shoot them.

Just out of curiosity, do you mean boxes of 50, bricks of 500 or cases of 5000? If it's cases, nice neighbour!

Different brands of ammo even new will have particulate crud settling in the action, so I wouldn't worry about the stuff. Unless you start finding problems, of course, in your rifles, like duds, off-sounding reports, hang-fires, split cases, etc.

10 years is not that old really... you should not have any problems. Earlier this spring, my girlfriend blew the extractor out of her IZH35 shooting old Eley ammo (from the 70's). The brass had become brittle and the whole base blew off. The ammo still worked fine in a bolt action gun.

You have a pretty nice neighboor!

Safe shooting,
Mike.

Fired some early 60's vintage CIL rounds (from Hy & Zels no less) in my CZ452. As long as the brass, nickel or copper washed cases are in good shape (no corrosion, pitting, soft spots) you should be fine.
