Old 870 stock set on a new 870~play in the fit between receiver & butt*update
hotos
Hey guys~as a winter project, I refinished a 1951 Wingmaster, "Corn Cob" stock set and mounted it to my 870P. Didn't notice any play, but I was probably too busy patting myself on the back admiring it.
Anyhow, after shooting...I noticed a VERY slight bit of play in it and I figured I didn't tighten it enough. (though I did inspect that area of the stock, and didn't remove any material when refinishing) I removed the recoil pad, gave it a VERY tight crank with a large flat head, and there is still just a tiny bit of play there. Either the spec is slightly different, or, perhaps the walnut shrunk a little. Is this common? Have any of you ever put shims on the side of the wood where it inserts into the receiver? The play is so minor that it wouldn't take much. Just thought I'd ask.
Thanks!
PS~are additional washers under the screw head ever req.? The play wasn't forward/backward...
***UPDATE~hey guys, sourced one of these form a CGN member (thanks!) but it wasn't the fix.
In place...
But the end result...
As suspected, the fit without this part seemed ok, just some side-to-side play. I formed a fine, tinfoil shim and fitted it~no play/twist at all now. Almost invisible, but I'll test shoot it and see what happens. Seems pretty solid though. (worked hands-on in a metal shop for 7 years) Anyhow, couldn't imagine exactly what that plate was supposed to do, but I don't think it was the remedy to my situation. Any thoughts?
