I've decided I want to shoot an old A5 in the duck blind this fall. I don't own one, yet, but I do want to buy a really nice one. I shoot mostly 2 3/4" and 3" steel #2,#3, and #4 loads.

My question is, what is the "IDEAL" model to get. light? mag? japan? Belgium? etc? So many options out there. Any experts here?

It will be for steel shot only. I'd like a vent rib 26", 28", worst case 30" barrel. I'd have no problem paying a premium for really nice, original one, then taking it to a smith, and have him open it up to MOD for me.

Thanks in advance guys, gixer.

Instead of getting a full choke opened up, why not get choke tubes installed??? The old A5 stalkers came with choke tubes for a year or two.

"IDEAL" I guess depends on your situation, but for me this 1969 Auto-5 Magnum 12g (Belgian)with a 28" Hastings barrel (threaded for chokes) is the cat's a$$.

Japanese is what you want or prepare to get the choke modified, tubes installed or an aftermarket barrel. I picked myself up another Japanese made Auto 5 magnum Invector Plus, sporting aftermarket synthetic stocks for a song because it had the modified tube seized in, haven't tried to change it as it patterns my favorite loads very well. I'm considering getting it dipped in the old school Mossy oak break-up since the bluing is mostly worn.

Awesome. Thanks for the help guys. So looks like a 3" magnum is what im after. Fixed choke is fine, just have it opened up, or look for a factory tap barrel with chokes, or a hastings barrel with chokes.

I'll be on the look out for the right gun.

Getting your hands on a decent Magnum should be doable, I've seen many nice ones on the EE. Mine came with a 30" vent rib full fixed choke. I had the barrel cut to 28" and Remchokes installed by another member in Delhi.
It took me a while to find the Hastings barrels (28" vent rib and slug barrel with iron sights) and they weren't cheap and that was many years ago, but the cut barrel was working just fine. If you get one, I promise you'll fall in love.

There are options out there. I do, with my old auto 5s, what you want to do with yours and have for years now. Magnums with fixed chokes are reamed to Light Modified or Improved Cylinder and bang away. Fixed choke magnums or light twelves are easier to come by and don't demand as much money as the screw in choke models. You can always get a fixed choke auto 5 have it reamed and use it while looking for a screw in choke barrel. Just keep in mind that the light model barrels don't interchange with the magnum receivers and visa versa.

These old "Humpbacks" are right at home in the duck blind!
