Old colt pistol value

My great-grandfather left one of these to my grandfather, who in turn left it to my dad. The .455 Webley 'Eley' was a limited run from what I've been told. I've heard remarked that they can fetch as much as $4,500 in good nick, but so many have been neglected.

In doing some searching I found a great video describing the various British military units who used these pistols, and what the different markings represent:

Hope that sheds some light on this great piece of history :D

What's this thing worth? I have the opertunity to buy it, but I think he's asking too much.....

Any info at all would help....

Government model
Colt automatic calibre 455

Lots of the blueing has been removed with a scotch brite pad by the look of it.....

Cheers!

Perhaps in the United States at a major auction, but in Canada not likely.

There are a fair number of .455 "Eley" 1911's floating around up here. I know there are members on here who have had several of them. I've heard typically the selling price runs from $900 to $1600. Perhaps a truly minty original example could more. I'd take a nice Canadian contract 1911 over a .455 Eley any day.

Seems like there's a lot of very optimistic pricing for 1911's lately.

Yah $4,500 sounded like a stretch to me as well. Value is a moot point for me really, as this pistol has a lot more intrinsic or sentimental value and will be staying in my family.

Just out of curiosity, why are the Canadian contract models harder to come by?

There certainly may be more interest in the CC pistols in Canada, and they are nice. Personally, I find the .455 very interesting. Both types have seen a lot of use, often in both wars, and it is difficult to find an example in very good condition. Many of those chambered in .455 that went to the RAF were refinished while in service. The British also melted down many of them. I'm still hoping to find an original CC and .455 in nice condition.
