I was in the local shop tonight for some Winchester Xpert, and they had a few boxes of old Supreme Shotshell, Challenger, Standard Load #2,1oz, steel shot 12Ga, for $4.99/20, so I thought what the hell, and picked up a couple of boxes.

I'd guesstimate this pretty old ammo, maybe found 'out back' somewhere. I'm sure people here remember this ammo, how new could it be?

I'm going to pattern them and all, but any idea what to expect? Craptastic? Firing through full and mod/improved chokes.

I'm doubting they'll rival the Win High Velocity, but for $4.99? What range would this load be useful at?

Thanks.

If I am right, this sounds like the CIL ammo that they had out a few years ago. Not the same as the CIL Imperial label, but a newer run.

If it's the one I am thinking of, the plastic is semi-transparent - you can see the shot inside the cartridge.

If so, the shells are fine for normal use - hunting or clays, whatever. But do not reload the cases, as they seem to have over size primer holes.

I used to use the old CTC Supreme lead shells, they did the job OK. I think they were made by CIL as SPI mentioned. I'm not sure if steel would also be made by CIL. If I remember right, $5/box is about what the lead shells cost back then. I would save them for cripple loads and stick to the Win X-pert for bringing them down. Not sure I would put steel through a full choke either, unless its a newer gun that is specifically stated as safe for steel.

I loved the Supreme 3" load. They were loaded by Challenger, and packaged for Canadian Tire. It was 3-4 years ago CTC stopped carrying them. I want to several different CTC stores and bought up all I could.

They are likely around 1400 fps.

Not that old, maybe 5-6 years max. Steel hasn't been around in Canada very long.

Thanks guys. Workin Man, good idea on the 'finishing' shots. Waterfowler, thanks for the age reference.

Shells are made by SEC LIBEC, Quebec. Challenger. Grey box with green top. 1400fps, that sounds good.

They were marked $10.99, sal$4.99. Still some there at Elizabeth Ave, if anyone local wants some.

I'll use them in my Toz-34, supposedly it can handle the steel shot.
