Have an older bottle of G96's Gun Blue cream.

It hasn't been used in awhile and it's gone from a cream to drier chucks.
Mainly using Birchwood Casey "SuperBlue" to do full barrels and or receivers.
But for minor scraps and scuffs the cream does comes in handy.

Hmm what could I could use to refresh it? (bring it back to a cream)
Down loaded the MSDS, to see what's in it.

There are only 3 main ingredients.
Copper nitrate crystal, selenious acid, nitric acid.
Thinking of calling a couple labs in town or other places that might sell me some selenious acid or nitric acid in a small amount.
Then I had an epiphany. LOL
How simply...just add a few table spoons of SuperBlue...

Voilà Just like that, it's like a new bottle.

Thought I'd share in case you have a bottle of G96 chunkers too!

Add water, works fine.Water is the ingredient that evaporates .I have been adding water to various bottles over the past 30 years of using it with no ill affects .But what do the hell do I know.

To be fair as listed on the SDS, those are the only 3 hazardous ingredients. Many other compounds will make up the mixture. Expect a solvent or 2, stabilizer and emulsifier that won’t be listed. Water is usually a component in at least a small amount. Be cautious when mixing any acids to this, best case could cause damage to the firearm, worst case… fire, explosion or toxic gas creation.
Glad the mixture with the similar liquid worked, if in doubt you can always call the manufacturer for advice.
Stay safe, lots of stuff for smithing has some nasty ingredients in it. Worth reading the SDS even for the stuff done in the home workshop.
Cheers

Water is the unlisted ingredient in all of the componentes so just add water. DO NOT ADD SOLVENT OR CHEMICALS YOU COULD GET A REACTION IF YOU DO. Super blue is the same chemical make up or close to it.
I used to make my own bluing solutions, got my recipes from old gunsmith manuals .

Random comment. I was given a bottle of this stuff and my mind was blown by the instantaneous blue effect. I was expecting it to take a while. Instantly turning black when I slapped it on was a surprise. I use it on random tools, parts and jigs I machine and it's perfect for that.

Agreed.
That is why I was after the selenious acid which was @ 5% max of the original makeup found on the msds.
But adding SuperBlue to the G96 paste seems to work very well.
Now I've added a bit more, bringing it up to a thicker liquid which I now apply with a acid brush like a paint.
Last barrel I did after heating it, turned out great.
