been looking at some old hunting mags from the 1955 to 1960 period. what really impresses me is the diversity, there are articles on hunting everything from squirrel, quail, geese, and racoons, to elk, caribou, moose, grizzly, and elephant. there is even an article on capturing andean condors in south america. and another on muzzleloading shotguns. only one article about whitetails, hunting them in north carolina with dogs and buckshot, the author says he has killed 264 deer this way.

seems prices on guns hasn't really changed that much once inflation is figured in, ie: winchester 94 was $93 in 1960, according to the bank of canada, that equals $639 today. there is even a remington model 870F listed for more than $1000 in 1960 dollars. and btw, an untouched 1941 johnson was $68.

I love going through old stuff like that. I had a bunch but got rid of them when we moved into a smaller place. I also remember the "Cartridge of the Month" series. It fascinated me when I was a kid!

I've been collecting the old shooting magazines for many years now...every so often my wife will say "Why don't you throw those out...?" at which point I look at her with that look she seldom sees  and she quickly changes the subject.

I explain to her once again  that it is a wonderful archive of information documenting the details of older guns; the kind I am likely to buy or trade for...in fact it's rare that I end up with a rifle or pistol now that I can't look up some article about - and speaking about the piece in the present tense. These treasures can usually can be had for about 50 cents an issue...what a deal! :)

I got a small gun digest collection going my oldest copy is the 1961 edition. Really neat to see how things changed in the last 44 years.

I have boxes and boxes of old gun magazines, plus shelves of them in my garage and downstairs in my computer room . If I come across a good article I photo copy it on the HP Photosmart and put them into various binders(I have about 20 loose-leaf binders for different calibers of guns, DIY etc., etc..)
I usually buy them at garage sales or Gun shows .A lot are given to me by people wanting to downsize .
