Guys, opinions needed here. i have a KV weaver, given to me by my maternal grandfather, that i would like to mount on a savage 99c 308 inherited from my paternal grandfather, the idea is to have a family rifle package. Do you figure the old KV would stand up to the recoil? It is 2 3/4-5x32 ? with the power adjustment under a dust cap beside the windage adjustment. Is it worth the risk?

Ask Trace Scope Repair in Calgary. They really know their stuff and are first rate to deal with. I don't have contact info at my finger tips for them but a look at the back pages of "Access" or a 411 search will get you to them. They are Weaver repair and customization specialists, prices are very reasonable.

Providing that the scope is not broken it should work O.K.

I think that access means the publication rag called access to firearms?

Depending largely on the age of the scope it may or may not stand the recoil of a 308 in a Sav. 99 rifle. It probably will , but why take the chance when the right answer is a phone call away? Then again if something breaks one can always have it repaired.

Friend of mine had the exact same scope on a 300 H&H for about thirty years so I don't think a 308 will be much trouble.

The scope can be set at either 2 3/4 or 5 power, not varible between these powers, right?

The only issue with the "just try it " approach, is this scope is more than $$ to me. My grandpa gave it to me, and his father gave it to him. The only reason for trying it on the savage 99, is to make the family package, that I can one day pass it down to a child and continue the tradition.

No harm in getting it checked out by Trace before you use it, since you say it has value more than money to you. Be unafraid to use an old Weaver on a .308, they were built to take it.

just talked to phil at trace, he said he wouldnt try it. No problem with the adjustments coming apart, but the power adjustment might not take it, it is a rack and pinion system on the older ones. Just put a fairly new straight 4 power weaver classic "k4". Classy looking package, just gotta get it shootin straight now. Thanks again for recomending trace, i will definetly use them again if i have to, very helpful.
