Well there was another thread where I posted some stolen pics of a Faux case coloured finish on the Henry 22M. from another forum. I had a few inquiries as to how it's done.Having just aquired another one I felt confident enough to try this on an old one, the painted reciever was getting beat up looking anyways.
This is mine and how I did it......
Begin by removing the Reciever cover, simplly done by removing the tang stock screw.Pull off the stock and then remove the four side screws from the reciever. The "cover" will slide off upwards, careful the bolt will usually come off with it.
Next I removed the factory finish......a chemical stripper is the easiest method.(I like Circa 1850 Soft Strip, it's pretty mild stuff)
I applied it, wrapped it in a paper towel, placed it in a baggy and went to bed.
The next day I removed it , rinsed off the peeled paint and was left with this...
Apply some Cold Blue...I used Outers just cause I had some, don't be too fussy about coverage, you want a Blotchy look anyways. It's actually quite darker then the pics suggest.
I applied the cold blue in multiple apps, blob it on thicker in some places then others to get some darker and lighter areas. After rinsing and drying you need to polish some areas to reapply the blue on, these highly polished spots are where you'll really get the nice straw and blue colours later.(I used a small brass wheel on the dremel to hit these areas)
After you polish up some places using a soft rag apply a quick wipe of blue on these areas...with some practise you can get some real good colours start to show up.
After a few touch ups, repolish some blander areas etc. I called er quits.
Give a real good rinse with warm water.
Last step was to "polish" the entire reciever witha small felt wheel on the dremel.....go VERY LIGHT here as the finish will remove easily, I just wanted to smooth it up in areas and blend some of the darker areas.
It's really hard to get good pics that show off the straw and blue colours, they seem to wash out into a grey colour in the pics....but it looks Great in natural light. You really can't screw this up and if your unhappy with the results it will literally wipe off with a steel wool and you can start over....it does take some effort and time but what doesn't.
For the final step and to protect the case colours you'll need to apply a good quality clear coat....I used a satin spray, gloss would work too, I just prefer the satin. The clear coat is important as the cold blue finish is thin and won't last long unprotected. Bonus is if you hate the results just paint er Black again !
I'll post up some Assembled pics soon as I get some free time to throw it all back together.
Thanks for the interest
