old mossberg semi's

I picked up a nice old mossberg 342kb-bolt action, probably 50 years old but very well kept ,feeds very smooth,shoots very accurately.They seem to feel very solid and I like the way they are built.Pretty good value for the money too

What I would like to know is how the older semi automatic mossberg .22 's [model 151 and 351 ,I believe]stack up-are they just as reliable and accurate as the bolt actions?How do they compare with the new semi automatic .22's?[ruger 10/22, marlin 60&795 remington 597]
 
I have several permutations of the 151 series Mossbergs and a couple of the 351's. I actually prefer the 151's,[particularly the mannlichers] but they are all solid performers with very few issues. Like any semi-auto, they require a periodic thorough cleaning of the action, but aside from that, they are top quality 22's, and I personally would not trade one of my 151's for 5 10-22's. +1 on the 151, I have a 151M (full stock, target version) and it shoots as well as I can with open sights. It likes Dynapoint GT's, shoots small groups (~1" @ 50yds, open sights) and functions 100% with them. It does seem a bit fussy about cleanliness, but will run approximately 500 rounds through before needing a simple field strip and wipe down. I am spoiled with my Ruger pistols, which will easily run 1000+ rounds through before needing cleaning.

are the mossbergs any more fussy about cleaning and ammo than say-a ruger 10/22 or marlin 795?What is the reason for the preference of the 151 over the 351?
 
I just recently picked up a Mossberg 352kb off the EE. The seller stated the firing pin needs replacing. When I received the rifle I found two firing pins in the box. The seller stated they were new from Numrich but were to short, when I checked they were just slightly short. Assuming they are the right pins I am hoping that maybe the hammer needs to be replaced along with the new firing pins to accomodate the new style pins(if indeed they are new style). I also noticed the return spring has lost its springyness? lol. But before I go and order a new hammer,firing pin, and spring I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts. The firing pins from Numrich look to short but they seem to pass the edge of the bolt face slightly. Cant test fire with spring all compressed. Anyone have experience with swapping firing pins in these?
 
yah,I saw that one on EE too and was considering it-but the trouble is, you could end up spending a lot more than you planned if you can't do the repair yourself.

I do appreciate sellers being open and honest about the condition is, though-as that seller was.I don't like surprises...
 
Repairing is not the problem. Its getting the right parts from western the first time to save time and shipping. Im 99% sure you need to change the hammer when you change the firing pin to the new style though.
 
If you want parts that actually fit and work. It is hard to beat Havlin Sales in the US. [They do ship to Canada] The folks there are truly knowledgeable, and only work with Mossberg, so are on the inside track when it comes to parts. I just checked on their website, and a new firing pin is $18.00 US. This will fit without any other changes. Regards, Eagleye
 
Ahh Mossberg pros, thankyou Eagleye. I called Numrich and it was like talking to a robot lol. I'll try Havlin tommorow.

I have a model 350k (mfg 58-60) it is without a doubt, one of my favourite semi's. Shoots and functions great, very accurate.
 
I have a 151M and 46M. Great rifles with quite a cult following, be careful as these are addictive rifles. :)

Keep them clean, don't over oil the actions in the semi or they gum up real bad with the gunpowder residue, I use G96 spray.
Don't dry fire these rifles!

Also after removing the mag, and making sure the chamber is clear, just put the 151s Cocking Knob in the "safe position", the springs will be just fine.

Mossberg 152K was my first 22. I managed to break firing pin a couple years ago but also managed to make one up. Very accurate rifle and very reliable although it has feeding problem with some ammo types. Cleaning from the breech by the way. Beautiful design.
 
My model 51 , and 2 - 151s are great for either target or gophers. When it picks the ammo it likes, it is almost infalible...cycles and fires steady. One of the most accurate .22 rifles I own.
