Hi

this is a recoil pad from an older savage rifle. it's made of a black solid plastic and a brown rubbery pad. Now I cut the stock on this rifle for my daughter

I don't personally think it can be reshaped easily now that the butt is smaller. Seems to me the rubber is too soft to be sanded down.... what do you think ? should I get a new one easier to fit? or there's a way to reshape this one?

How would you do this , or what make/model would you buy please ?

thank you for your help
stef

I've done an old pad that looked just like that.
I used my belt sander and some 100 grit. Go slow. Tape the wood stock to avoid nicks if you do final shaping with it attached.

I don't know of any way to sand or grind it that will make it larger so it will fit the larger stock... or is your picture not correct... the stock width appears larger....

Or he had the pad offset to show the difference in length clearly.

In the event that is the case, why would he think he couldn't sand it? Dunno.

Nothing to lose by trying.

I've resized recoil pads by mounting them on the stock, tracing a fine outline of the stock to the oversized pad, remove pad and rough fit on a benchtop belt sander then hand fit the last bit, both using 80grit sandpaper. As for the stock being thicker than the pad, I ain't no magician. :p

As willisjake says, tape the butt to protect it, one layer close to the edge and several layers a bit back from the edge, fit the pad and reshape using a belt sander or bench grinder etc. I mount a disc sander in my vice, place a piece of white paper on the floor and sand mine looking down on to the white paper, it lets you see your lines a lot easier than the workshop floor. When you get really close, take care and change to a fine grit paper/disc. It is possible to finish the whole job with the pad on the butt, just gotta take time and care towards the end. That pad will sand up no problems.
Or you could keep the pad as is for when you want to restore the stock to full length and get another pad for the shorter stock. When I lengthen a stock it is very difficult to match the timber so instead I use a piece of acrylic in amber or clear, 20-30mm thick and sand up the whole lot to the correct lines. Then I remove the acrylic and polish it with cutlery polish or similar and end up with a see through extension to the stock with butt pad on the end.

IMHO, it's garbage.

It won't absorb any recoil even if it fits perfectly. Get a limbsaver grind to fit, slip on, or make a new one from a flip flop. There are threads on CGN on how to do this. I think the dollar store black knee pads are a good place to start. Just glue one on with epoxy and shape the edges.

thank you for all your ideas. Greatly appreciated.

Now that is funny. I want to see this. I will look for it.

...now, do you leave the thongs on or not? ;)

...he's right ^^^ (it's garbage), if it's for your daughter then get a new limb saver and grind it to fit like others have instructed using a belt sander and making tape...i've done many that way...she'll be delighted...post a pic when you are done!

Personally, I would scrape the old pad material from the hard base plate you have and shape the edge of the base plate to fit the new profile of the butt.
Then glue your new padding to that and trim it back. Then I'd drill and tap the butt stock to match the old holes in the base plate and screw it back on.

I like these ones:

you can flatten down the knee pads and epoxy into one 1" thick rubber pad.
On the other hand, if you don't mind the color, you can get a 3/4" one from the other one.

Fyi, the material cuts very nicely with an exacto knife: I cut off a little piece (see the photo above).

Personally, I would either go with single (1/2") or doubled (1" ). However, I did a quick check about sanding, the photo below shows dry sanding on the upper left section (material pills up). However, dip the paper in water first and it finished nicely, which I did just to the right of that area just mentioned (that's just to the right of the white mark on the upper piece). The bottom piece in the photos shows the as-purchased edge finish.

So yes, you could sand it down to 3/4" if that's what you're after. It would look fine.
