Hey guys~I have a couple of old Remington 11-48s (a 12 and a 28) that I'd like to keep original, as they're in superb condition. I am, however, considering using one of them for grouse in the future...and am debating whether or not to try and source a replacement barrel(s) to modify, modify the existing ones, forget all of that and buy an 870 pump in 20 gauge.. Thoughts?

The 12 has a fixed/modified choke, the 28 a fixed full. I don't hunt with a dog, and am losing hope that I'll ever be able to hit a flushed bird in thick cover. So, if I end-up moving this pursuit north where I'm likely to see them on trails/in trees...my .22lr might be the best choice. :)

Faced with the same considerations, what would you do? My gut tells me to try and source a beater 12ga. barrel for the 12, have it cut to 20"/new bead, and make that the "bush" gun. Failing that, an 870 in 20 ga., or get the original 28 barrel shortened to 20" and interchangeable choke added.

Should be possible to turn up a spare 11-48 12ga barrel.
28 less likely. How many 28s did they make, compared with 12s? I'd suggest that altering the 28 would be a shame.

Don't touch the 28ga regardless what you decide.:)

Had a feeling this gun was destined to be a safe queen. :) Seems a travesty to mess with this barrel, as I understand the 12s in this model are more common. Really pretty gun.

Always wanted a 20g 870....or Stoeger Condor Outback.

I would use the 28ga and take good care of it. Just not alter it. The barrel sells for what a complete gun does
Here is what corson's sells a used 1148 28ga barrel for. Still want to cut it???

Model 11-48 28ga

25” Full Vent Original 95%+ $550

25” Mod Plain 95% $400

Nope. :) I saw a barrel for this gun on a US site for $649 a year or so ago. I had no idea.

Looks like I might be 870-bound.

.......I have a WTB in the EE for a 12g barrel for the 11-48. Anyone have a lead on where I might find one in Ontario? Sent an email to Epps this morning, but it would seem more likely that there is a Remington gunsmith out there with one sitting in the corner. Yeah I know...high hopes. :) Saw one listed in the US for $150. :(

I have a 28 gauge Remington Model 11-48 with a skeet barrel. This shotgun using 7 1/2 Remingtion Express loads, patterns better than an 28 gauge that I have patterned.

With this shotgun I managed one time to bag a partridge(ruffed grouse) on the thrid shot.Missed the first two.Bagging one on the thrid shot does not happen often in the partridge woods.Long before you get to the thrid shot the bird is either bagged or out of sight in the woods.
