Hey guys~I have a couple of old Remington 11-48s (a 12 and a 28) that I'd like to keep original, as they're in superb condition. I am, however, considering using one of them for grouse in the future...and am debating whether or not to try and source a replacement barrel(s) to modify, modify the existing ones, forget all of that and buy an 870 pump in 20 gauge.. Thoughts?
The 12 has a fixed/modified choke, the 28 a fixed full. I don't hunt with a dog, and am losing hope that I'll ever be able to hit a flushed bird in thick cover. So, if I end-up moving this pursuit north where I'm likely to see them on trails/in trees...my .22lr might be the best choice.
Faced with the same considerations, what would you do? My gut tells me to try and source a beater 12ga. barrel for the 12, have it cut to 20"/new bead, and make that the "bush" gun. Failing that, an 870 in 20 ga., or get the original 28 barrel shortened to 20" and interchangeable choke added.
