This old shotgun has just resurfaced from a family estate - there are no current plans to sell it but I am interested in any information that I can get. I know it is a European shotgun and I think its old..... beyond that I am looking for information.....

Its a 12g and was shot on holidays into the late 1990s...

Well, we will see if anyone corrects me on this but believe gun is from 1870's which would make it quite an early breech loading center-fire. The steel butt plate and single bite support that.
Appears to be a Schneider patent mechanism although the examples I have seen are back action rather than bar action. The barrel proofs are from Liege, Belgium, but isn't that a Birmingham proof mark on the action flat(?). The raised cheek piece and sling hardware are not in keeping with a British gun but rather a continental gun. Google search found some later Theate & Co. guns with very similar engraving. Spelling Phoenix incorrectly on rib not a good omen. If barrels are in v. good condition then would limit use to low pressure 2.5" shells only regardless of holiday tradition.
