So, not sure if this is the right forum, but here goes

I have an older (early 70's) sako AV in 375 H&H that i adore, one of the neat little manlicher stocked carbines. Sweet rife and a wonderful trigger. Problem is that i'm almost 50 and my eye's have decided to go for a s**t. So the irons don't work so hot for me any more. Dammit, have to put a scope on her.

So i found a very nice little leupold 1-4 and new in the box sako rings that keep it nice and low. Put them on, set up the windage with the mount and wow, thats a sleek little set up, maybe a scope won't be so bad!

Now i'm shooting my gallery loads thru it, no problem, then some heavier loads, 265gn lead at about 2000fps, no problem, then a full power load......and the scope mounts eject off the receiver under recoil.

All is not lost, my face fields the objective ring and i manage to catch the scope before it falls with my support hand.....much to the amusement of my best friend, who pointed out that he didn't think i was anywhere near that co ordinated....thanks.....

Sooooooo, any one know how to set up sako rings so the don't come loose under heavy recoil? And i really don't want aftermarket bases if i can avoid it as most of them have pointed screws that drive into the top of the receiver, plus the sako rings are just so compact!

Leupold ringmounts have been strong enough for my sako fiberclass 375h&h
I think these are lows, mediums might be better

Same thing happened to me the first time I mounted a scope on a Sako... similar scope to yours but it was a. 270w.... very annoying and unpleasant. Because the tapered bases only require a small amount of rearward movement of the mounts before they are completely free...they can react this way....and it can easily happen this way with a light scope like the 1-4 Leupold ...mine was a Vari-X lll 1.5-5. Heavier scopes will usually seat tighter on the tapered bases due to the scopes momentum under recoil..IF the recoil pin in the ring is not tight against the base. There are two schools of thought on this subject....one says make sure the recoil pin is tight against the 'U' shaped cutout in the integral base BEFORE tightening the bejeesus on the rings..the other says allow a small gap between the recoil pin and the integral base when tightening and allow recoil to drve the rings tighter on the tapered bases. I am in the former 'school of thought'!

Dunno what the general opinion of the Millett rings is, but I happen to like the ones on my A1 (I think, the smallest action in any case). I think they look pretty good in place, and seem to fit well with the overall look of the action a bit better than the Sako mounts.

I have mine on a .223, so recoil issues are not my issues, but I figure from mounting up my last scope, that the arrangement of the recoil lugs on those mounts seems pretty solid for what they are.

YMMV, and I would be pleased to hear other opinions.

Cheers
