Old timer with an old timer Winchester Cooey 64B

My Dad bought me this Winchester Cooey 64 at Canadian Tire in 1974. I still remember that day. Used it almost continuously till I finished High School then moved onto other things (Cars, Girls etc. You know the drill). The ole gun got forgotten in a closet until the registry happened and my Dad registered it in his name. I was off on the ships and didn't have time or even my own place to store it.

So long story short, I got it back from him a few weeks ago and cleaned it up. Took it to the range and ran a couple hundred rounds through it. Seems to work fine. Added a Simmons 22.Mag scope. First time out was a little messy then today I settled down a bit and dis some more plinking.

First grouping at 50 yds. Not so good but not terribly bad I guess.

Overall I enjoy this old rifle. Back in the day it was a squirrel's worst enemy. Probably a couple hundred at least ended their existence on this planet from this rifle. For something that's 40 yrs old it still runs well on bulk CCI Blazers. The magazines are a bit of a pain to load, they tear up your fingers, but other than that it's a lot of fun for not much money.

While I wouldn't consider myself an old-timer, i have a Lakefield 64B sitting in the closet. Dad had it before I came along, but it's mine now. Grew up picking off gopher's with it. Dad almost sold it because it wouldn't cycle properly for him while i was away at school. That changed when I came home and cleaned all the gunk out of it. Still runs like a champ.

The wife has now claimed it as "hers" and it's what she shoots at the range. Hoping to pass it down to my kids when they happen.
 
Great story! It's nice when we get things like this back from our youth.

Perhaps get some 600 grit silicon dioxide "wetordry" sandpaper and fold up a little patch so it's three or four layers thick and polish the sharp edges on the mouths of the mags. If the silvery colour bothers you a wipe with some cold blue solution will restore the like new look.
 
It was nice that Mother Nature gave us a decent day to get back out on the range. Temps 0 degs C and a light wind from the south west at 15 km/hr. I dragged the old Winchester Cooey out again for some more practice. And the results @ 50 yds were.....

Starting top left and working my way across. Was a little shaky getting started but settled down. A few clicks here and there on the scope eventually led me to a decent grouping on the lower right with 7 rounds boring a good size hole in the target! :) Again with the CCI Blazer bulk pack .22 LR's which the guns seems to like. I went onto shooting drywall screws from the leftover target stands after that! I know I made a bit of a mess but I cleaned it up and picked up way more brass than I laid down.

I always try to pick up more brass than I shoot. The wife got me one of those 'brass mower' thingies and it actually works pretty well. Sure saves on the back!

I adore my 64's! This thread is better than many 'cause yours works. They can be a touch finicky, but are certainly on my glam list.A happy from the start thread can only get better.

Having 50+ years of production, and still being made has gotta mean something.
 
I have a new savage 64, it's a pretty ok rifle. Im supprised with how lone this style rifle has been in production that theire are only 10 round mags for them still.

I think Canadian Tire sold a million of these. Pretty much everybody I knew back then had one! :)
 
I also really enjoy my Lakefield 64. Thought for a moment of selling it and getting a 10/22 but no. My 64 shoots flawless with the bulk CCI Blazer. Great rifle.

So I'm back to the range today to see if the ole' Winchester Cooey 64B will work a little better after a major cleaning. It seems to be hiccuping a lot with cheap bulk ammo. It loves CCI Blazers though and will eat them all day without a glitch. When I got there the "Range Pigs" left a freaking mess.

My wife has mine as well, She is in the truck with it before I can get out the door

Don't really know. I think in the right hands they're probably comparable. I've only fired one Ruger 10/22 and it appeared to be having difficulty feeding ammo into the chamber. Could have been just that one particular gun. My 64B is having similar issues feeding ammo at the moment. I think it might be the magazines are dirty or not 'nuff lubrication on the ammo. Cold weather could be the issue as well. More testing to come.
