just looking at an old hunting mag. from a 1955 weatherby ad:

"A Weatherby Magnum bullet travelling at 4000 fps disintegrates the moment it enters the animal's body. This internal explosion produces a stunning shock which kills instantly---even though no vital spot is hit!"

caliber listed are; 220 rocket, 257, 270, 7mm, 300, and 375 magnum.

None of those cartridges even produced 4000fps.Even if they could have the statement is pure crap.No vitals hit=no clean kill, let alone instantly.

The 220 Wby Rocket was a blown out 220 Swift, and easily broke 4000 with factory ammo using 50 gr bullets, however I agree with you on the importance of hitting vital organs.

I have read and heard about animals that die die instantly with poor hits, but I would bet that for every one that does there are probably ten to twenty that don't. :(

It's only been very recently that Weatherby has understood that high velocity big game rounds need premium bullets so that the bullet blow-up does not happen. I have a book written in the late 40's where the author complains about Weatherby's crappy bullet performance from his .300, and in a letter he recieved in answer to his complaint Weatherby recommended he switch to Nosler Partitions - his response, "Now they tell me."

Another company that went with the bullet blow-up idea was A-Square. The company makes what is called a bullet triad. The triad includes a mono-metal solid, a bonded core soft point, and a fragile bullet called the lion load - intended to grenade inside lightly built dangerous game like the big cats. When I suggested that the idea had merit over on Nitro Express - I was told quite firmly that the lion load had a terrible reputation in Africa, and could only be relied on with a broadside shot. Now could you imagine - stalking a lion in that long grass....think about the dream scene from The Ghost and the Darkness....and you have to decide if you have a broadside shot or if you have to change rounds!!

I guess that I should have specified that none of the cartriges listed that are legal for use on big game in most provinces could reach 4000fps.Other than the 220,none even come close with factory loads.

ah, i get it, weatherby was refering to the use of the 220 on gophers, so the ad isn't total bullsh#t.

why was the 220 rocket dumped? was it because is didn't have a belt? i thought weatherby's thing was speed and the 224 seems like a step down.

the 375 weatherby was just an improved H&H IIRC, can't see that hitting 4000fps.

The 220 got dumped because it didn't fit in the stable. No belt, and the NIH syndrome reared it's ugly head. The 375 Wby is one of the best cartrdges they ever made, substantial gains over the original (375 H&H), and not so much recoil your nose bleeds everytime you shoot it, great hunting caliber. None of the other Wby cals got to 4000 fps (not much besides hot varmint cals does, actually). - dan
