Old Winchester lever action

it looks like an early Model 1894 /M94 in a larger caliber. Perhaps a 30-30, 32 Special or 38-55. Not many came with the peep sight. The stock looks like it is broken by the string wrapping marks. pitted rather bad but would make a good shooter if the bore is good.

Those look like bear claw marks so it's obviously not a bear defense gun. The pitting is probably from using corrosive ammo and not cleaning with full-strength windex within five minutes. Better check the headspace, because hundreds die every year from it - I heard that from the friend of a guy I know who's cousin is a gunsmith. Finally, only use blackpowder, cause smokeless will blow it up (it's designed for BP) and don't ever load it indoors!

Looks like a 94, amd if in 30-30 it was designed for smokeless. The 30-30 was one if not the first comercial smokeless round.

How many numbers does the serial number have?
Easy does it with this one Gatehouse as if you put
it near the King, the King will whimper for sure.
With all that experience next to it, hell I shutter
to think what the King will do.
Maybe pick up a flinch....................

and a decent shooter as well.

Funny you ask, I just had a bunch with proper head stamp given to me.
I have necked down some 30-30 and they go easy.
Only problem is I own a 30-30.
Hard to mix them up as they are noticeably different on the business end.
I just get a tad uneasy when the head stamp is wrong and both calibers are
under the same roof.
Just me.

I looked up the serial number on the serial number site and found it was made in 1896!

I think I will try to remove some of the rust and give it a good cleaning. Probably refinish the stock, too...And get a new screw for the tang aperture sight

The hunters in 1896 must have ben pretty tough hombres, this rifle must weigh 11 lbs!

Yeah, saddle rings were only standard on carbines but a few people ordered rifles with saddle rings. Around the turn of the century you could get almost any feature you wanted on Winchester rifles and many did. Special order items were a good deal cheaper in those days.

A bored mind is a terrible thing to waste, so having some free time to kill, I finally put together a fact sheet on the true production ratios and the verified DOMs for the Winchester Model 1894/94.

As many of you will undoubtedly note, the figures I have compiled below vary significantly from the numbers published by George Madis in his tomes "The Winchester Book" and "The Winchester Handbook". All of my statistical numbers were derived from a detailed survey (conducted by the Cody Firearms Museum) of the first 353,999 serial number records, and from the Polishing Room Serialization Record Books (held by the Cody Firearms Museum).

Unfortunately for all of the many collectors and interested people, all of the remaining pre-64 factory warehouse records (serial numbers 354,000 - 2,600,000+ were destroyed in a fire in the late 1950s or early 1960s. Undoubtedly, all of the caliber, and the Rifle versus Carbine production number ratios would change drastically if the records were available for serial numbers 354,000 - 2,600,298. The Polishing Room Serialization Record Books (PRSRBs) which contain nothing more than just the serial number, fortunately survive up to serial number 1,352,066, which was manufactured on December 29th, 1945.
