Hello fellas. I have an older Winchester Model 101 12 gauge.
The markings on the barrel say New Haven, Conn, and on the other side it says Made in Japan. The gun is in immaculate condition and has fires less than 200 rounds in it's lifetime. The receiver has some very fancy engraving on it as well. I am wondering what the approximate value of this beauty would be. Any info is much appreciated. Thanks Nutterz!

Sounds like a Standard 70's Win. 101 if CONDITION is as you say $700-$1000 high end if it is 3'' less if its only 2 3/4'' they are good quality have a reputation for painful recoil do to design .

How fancy is the engraving ? If the receiver is blued, the engraving may be nice but not near as fancy as other grades of the 101 like the Diamond, Pidgeon, etc etc.

I think the reputation of excessive recoil is an odd one, over the years I have listened to and read different sides of that fence. Some people do feel it is excessive while others like me have not. I have owned several 12, 20, and 28 ga 101's in the past and currently Superposeds in 12, 20 and 410, but only with a 20 ga 101 "lightweight" did I find any recoil discomfort in shooting. In general I think the 101s were a bit on the light side even in the standard weight configuration and that may be a factor along with individual fit. Also the tall receiver height common to the Winny and Brownings may be a contributor in the fit relative to say lower receiver designs like Berettas and SKBs.

Struff, have you fired the Citori in 12 ga and found it felt to be a kicker as well or less so? They are usually heavier than the Supers( that also had lighter weight "Lightning" models).

I would have to put standard citori's and lighting citori's in the same class I think you are on to something regarding design . My personal favorite sa far as a compotision gun is the Rem. 3200 I shoot them well and they are farily reliable and i had a Pizza MX8 for a while it was ok but I did no better with it than the 3200

I would agree on the recoil comment also. I've owned 101 pigeon grade and a 101 single barrel, and both guns had notably more recoil then anything else I've shot trap with.

I have a 28 gauge Winchester Model 101.Nice working shotgun but a bit heavy for my taste in a 28 gauge field shotgun.

I've shot 125 rounds at clays in a single day with a Trap version of the 101. I didn't notice that the recoil was any different from any other comparable U/O. The shells used could be the deciding factor, though. I was using 7/8 oz target loads. If someone were feeding it 1 1/4 ounce heavy game loads, I'd expect lots more snap to it. But, that would be true of any gun.
