hi,
does anyone here know if there's a place in AB where i can shoot olympic trap? i live in calgary, but the AHEIA gun club has one bunker for olympic, and it's manually operated, so i never got a chance to shoot it as they usually don't have enough staff to operate it for us....
does anyone know if there's another place in AB (preferably southern AB) that has olympic trap?

Thanks

No others I know of.
The Beaverhills sporting clay has a wobble trap field that simulates bunker shooting. It is very challenging and a lot of fun. FS

The Alberta International Style Trapshooting Association (AISTA)is alive and well in this province. However, since the death of the Strathcona range the only actual bunker in Alberta is at the AHEIA range, and its use is very limited.

However, there are a few places that run wobble trap configured to throw international style targets - the same speed and angles. Beaverhill, as mentioned above, and the Hinton gun club are examples. Not quite the same as a bunker, but challenging none the less. Our shooter's scores are very similar shooting from the wobble trap and the bunker.

There are proper bunkers in Vancouver, and the Saskatoon gun club now has one in operation (thanks LLoyd!). Bunkers are also found in Winnipeg, Toronto and Montreal.

The Northern Alberta Shooter's Association still has the equipment to set up a couple of bunkers, and if we ever find the right piece of land we will build at least one. Finding land is a real problem, however.

If you are interested in Olympic trap come out to Hinton in the spring, meet AISTA and shoot some of the most challenging targets with some of the most capable shooters in Alberta. You won't regret it.

Next time you want to shoot it send me a pm. I will go to Aheia with you. I have run the machine a couple of times, but not had a chance to shoot it. I would love to replace that old set up, but a new one is $45000 and there aren't enough guys that would be happy shooting 18 targets with 50 shells

Thanks everyone for your replies... unfortunately both Beaverhills sporting clays and the hinton GC seem to be quite a drive from Calgary... However, if I'm ever heading to Edmonton for any reason, I'll make sure to stop buy one of them and give it a try there...

NZClaybuster... thanks a lot for your offer... I'll pm you when I'm heading to AHEIA... what works better for you? saturday or sunday? or during the week after work?

I've never shot at Hinton myself (my AISTA and National Team days were when the Strathcona Range was still alive and kicking) but I'll definitely second the AISTA comments.

I had TON of fun shooting as part of AISTA for the better part of 6 years; I'll never forget how much I loved shooting at the old Strat...

Likewise. And, if you're like me, you'll never forgive that lying slut they call our Mayor for shutting it down, ostensibly in order to build a "multi-use sports facility", and then proceeding to build NOTHING. Why stop now, Steve Mandel, you're on a roll - lets tear down a few hospitals to build "health centers" and then build nothing there, too. Stupid pr*ck!!

Does anyone have the AISTA contacts?

For the Beaver Hill Sporting Clays club, you can contact Sharptail himself (on this site). Or, because the Continental (wobble) trap at Beaverhill is a cooperative effort between AISTA and the Beaverhill club, you can also email Derryl or Cherie Weatherby.

For the Hinton range, you should contact Len McDougall, current President of AISTA.

I'll PM you with the contact details, so as to not provide info to antis or other pranksters.

Amen.

AND I'll never lose my hate-on for Mill Woods building a subdivision RIGHT next to the range, and then complaining about the gunfire.

The sad part is, at least with Strat the gunfire stopped at sundown - in Mill Woods, you still hear a ton of gunshots at all hours of the night. :jerkit:
