just pull a sheet out, tear into quarters, and clean the bore.
I use bore butter to finish the job when putting the gun away.

Myself and another CGN (Hakx) use Windex to swab then I use the borebutter. Heck, windshield wash will work just as good.
I also swab my shotgun slug barrel(smoothbore w/RTC) every 3 shots with Borebutter, helps soften the leading.

black powder fouling is water soluble and not grease soluable so you want to use some water based solvent to clean the bore before you protect it with a grease or oil of some form. Using grease/oil based solvents means that you only wipe the fouling away but probably leave a thin film of residue on the metal.

How do I get over my paranoia of rust?
I think it is a question of time and humidity. Rust does not form instantly on a cold or cool barrel. If you are camped out and have shot the gun, basically wet patches to remove most of the fouling, a couple of dry patches to dry it then an oil patch of some sort to protect it until the trip is over. If you are at a range, normally you would probably not bother cleaning until you get home then take the breach block out and use a bronze brush and warm water followed by dry patches and a stable not volatile oil. At the range you might want to carry a couple of light smokeless loads to fire through the gun after you have finished with black powder; makes cleaning a lot easier.

Bore butter is not oil based grease - its a vegetable based product and black powder fouling is soluable in it. It is desireable to soften and clean the carbon residue by blowing it out the barrel. I use it in front of the ball on my revolvers.The next shot blows new butter down the bore taking the fouling out leaving crisp rifling for the ball to grab. I havent had to clean the bore of fouling on my cap and ball revolvers since using butter. After several thousand rounds - still no carbon or rust, even after putting the pistols away for a winter and come spring - the bore is still clean and no rust . [after shooting I put butter down the bore before putting the gun away]
