I keep hearing abount non corosive 7.62x39 ammo being avaiable sometime....is this true or just talk????
wcmd.

Its not easy to find and it sure isn't as cheap as the Czech stuff.

Wolf - Look around at gunshows. Not much around.

Norinco - Same as above. Not much around.

Remington and Winchester - Some stores stock it .... Warning !!! Be prepared for sticker price shock.

In my experience, and from what I have seen, read, and heard about, any cartridge that is Berdan primed is pretty much corrosive.

After firing one, look in the spent brass/steel case and if you see two little primer holes instead of one big one then you have Berdan Primers.

Who doesn't clean their rifles anyway?

I picked up a box of 20 rounds (American Eagle) Last one from Whole sale in Lethbridge, cost was about 11 bucks. If you compair it to the other rifle ammo out there, the cost isn't bad at all, but then for a plinker that's just to much for me, I'm gonna be ordering a case from Canadian ammo, I'm not to worried if it's corrosive or not I always at least run a couple a patches through right after shooting anyways then when I can I do a more complete cleaning.

Some people don't.

I recently examined a two year old SKS-D that had not been "cleaned" for three months and 400 rnds. There was no corrosion anywhere, he had been using "corrosive" Czech ammo, the owner had never removed the trigger group. Needless to say the rifle was filthy, but I could see no evidence that Czech ammo is corrosive.

Czech ammo is definetely corrosive, this has been confirmed by CanAm and a couple other ammo suppliers who know their stuff. However, that doesn't necessarily mean that it's guaranteed to corrode the rifle, under the right conditions there may be little to no corrosion even after several hundred rounds worth of shooting.

The potassium chloride salt produced by the primer, when combined with moisture, will cause rust. This is common knowledge, and a proven fact. If there's little or no ambient moisture, however, there will be very little corrosion. Long story boring; keep your gun dry & oiled/greased, and cleaning isn't as critical. Shooting on a rainy day, on the other hand? Bring your windex to the range with you!!

I don't have an sks right now, but am thinking of getting one again (I used to have one several years ago). I have noticed the inexpensive prices on the latest czech ammo and this is causing me to consider buying one. However, is the 7.62x39 drying up? I never see the Norinco or Wolf ammo around anymore.

Last I heard the UN is keeping allot of the stuff from being shipped around.
Buying is easy, but getting it here is not.

Many ammo suppliers have been waiting years, are not telling us about this.

This is why I have been telling people to get ready to get into reloading, and a brass catcher might help. :D

I hear Chavez just bought Millions of 7.62x39 rounds to go with the huge batch of Aks he just bought from Russia...he likes to stick it to the UN, so he might be the next source.:D

The best known non-corrosive ammo in Canada is:

-Norinco Silver Box (90's headstamps)
-Norinco Yellow Box (90's headstamps)
-Wolf commercial ammo
-Remchester stuff.

And that about sums it up. Everything else, assume corrosive.

I hate the UN.... ineffective bloated bureaucracy (sp?) that accomplishes nothing. As per their usual policy of maintaining world order, peace, and humanity, they seek the guilty, but punish the innocent.

Assume that all surplus 7.62x39 ammo has a corrosive primer, but I think the conditions have to be right for rust to happen.

I had a very scary momnet a week ago when I discovered I had missed cleaning my Cz 858 after firing a bunch of czech surplus ammo. It had been siting there for a week dirty after shooting corrosive ammo. Man was I pissed at myself! After a good cleaning there wasn't a hint of rust or damage to the bore or any other parts so I was lucky. The day I shot the rifle it was hot and dry out, so maybe there wasn't enough water in the air to condense inside the rifle to cause rusting?

On the other hand, I had some orange form on my norinco SKS bolt face after shooting Wolf ammunition, I cleaned it the next day thinking that Wolf wasn't corrosive and found out I was mistaken.

You never really know what is going to happen with this stuff and if the conditions are just right then you're going to ruin your rifle. I guess it depends on how much you like your firearms, if you don't care if it gets ruined go ahead and don't clean it.

apperently(from an unconfirmed source) the US military is also buying up lots of ammunition for AK's, due to their policy of "Iraqization" (reminiscent of the failed Vietnamization). Many of the ammo dumps were scooped up by insurgents and Sadr militias, so there is an acute shortage in the Iraqi army.

How about around the gas system? Mine showed signs of corrosion on the gas piston and cylinder area with the same ammo when I neglect to clean after just couple of days.

So now UN has obtained authority to stop 7.62X39 circulation. I used to think that they just sit and talk and generate some non-enforceable sanctions on paper.

I've fired a ton of hungarian 7.62 dated 03 and 04 so its pretty much brand new manufacture. I get it from SIR in Winnipeg for $50 for 300rds.

That is interesting.

Yes they are buying up a bunch of the wolf stuff but keep in mind that the americans are rebuilding a military over there. The ammo dumps allong with a bunch of the existing AKs and SKSs were destroyed. The US is now equipping them with Norinca AKs apparently. I wouldn't read too much into this, if the US was giving them M16s then I would see a problem?
