Remington 700 BDL in 30-06 with a trap door magazine.

Will a one piece scope mount in steel or aluminum help to
strengthen the action to increase accuracy or make it shoot
more consistent?

Is the increased restriction to the chamber and difficulty in loading
the magazine worth the trouble?

Thanks
Bill

Pick up a Leopold base the restriction to the mag is no worse than the scope above and yes it does help a little in stiffening the action

It is unlikely that you would detect any difference in accuracy or shooting consistancy.

You may find that a bridge mount does reduce access for loading. Some bases are cut away on the right side to reduce this.

In theory, a one piece base is superior, from the standpoint of alignment, etc.

Sometimes there is a benefit to having the base or bases bedded to the rifle. The dimensions are not always the same from rifle to rifle and from base to base. It is usually a benefit to have the action bedded correctly and the barrel floated. I think these things would contribute more to accuracy than any stiffness gained by a one piece base.

Sounds like a split decision.
Seems like if I have a option and don't mind the
difficulty in loading I might as well go with a one piece
since it won't hurt any.
If anyone else has any experiance please let me know.

Thanks everyone

In my opinion it is not worth the restriction to the magazine, I hate a big clubby piece of steel over the ejection porton a field gun.

i agree with bigbull. the recommended bases for a rem 700 for long action .30-06 and magnum calibers are 35 front and 36 rear or 98 1 piece or a 1 side mount. i don't think there is enough to be gained by restricting access to the mag.i have a 7mm ultra mag and i find it difficult enough to access the mag with those large shells, especially with cold fingers, as it is and thats with 35 and 36 mounts.IMHO

X2 ....... I have an older Model Seven with the old style three hole all steel mount on it. I am getting it changed the the new configuration with the four holes, extra hole on the rear bridge and gonna use weavers two pc bases instead. Alot lighter and opens up the loading area..

"...Will a one piece scope mount in steel or aluminum help to
strengthen the action to increase accuracy or make it shoot

I think the mount and scope can have a lot to do with the accuracy.

A bad scope - well that should be self explanatory. You will never shoot consistent good groups with a bad scope.

But if the mounts do not fit correctly and when tight inflict stress on the scope, that can affect accuracy. That is why bases sometime need to be bedded to the action... I have seen one piece bases bend considerably when all the screws were tightened... by the same token I have two piece bases completely out of line and with the rings installed would be bending the scope. The bending or stress induced to the scope is also induced to the action slightly.

My experience has been the average shooter will simply install a scope (usually quite canted) in Weaver rings and bases as tightly as they can and think that is all they have to do.This will probably not matter much to the average hunter with an average rifle using factory ammo... but to anyone wanting the best accuracy with what they have, little details can make a difference.

Two piece steel bases are lighter than one piece steel bases ...especially on a long action. I am in the school that favours "stress free" mounting ...and I think Burris Zee rings (with the little inserts) help to achieve this...
I read somewhere where a guy concluded that one piece mounts expanded much more than 2 piece bases and at a different rate than the action when heated up - he concluded that induced even more scope stress...

Just go and shoot the rifle and have fun................

Many thanks for all the replys.
I have two piece mounts at present and the
rifle shoots well.
I just thought I would inquire about the
one piece base if it might be an improvement.

Thanks

"...have a lot to do with the accuracy..." Not if the rifle doesn't shoot well already. A scope won't make a poor shooting rifle shoot better. It'll only let you see the target better so you can place the shot more accurately. Loose or improperly installed mounts or scopes will, of course, not help at all. Same thing applies to iron sights too.
