Mounting bases on a hunting rifle, would you use two piece or a one piece base and why? My buddy bought the one piece base because he figured it would be stiffer. I'm thinking about the two piece just for more room in the action and less unnecessary weight. Rifle is a Savage 111FCXP3 (one of the cheap package guns).

The advantages and disadvantages I've listed are pretty trivial, are there any other more tangible benefits for one or the other?

Any strength a common one piece base may add to an action is academic.

For a hunting rifle, I want a two piece so that I have full access to the action/mag.

On a target rifle, I usually have a canted base for LR shooting and these are most stable for alignment when one piece. In no real hurry to load/unload.

I have used both styles and prefer one piece base.

It all boils down to personal preference. Both have "pros" & "Cons".

Most of the One piece bases these days have the base "relieved" on the chamber opening side to facilate easier loading/unloading/ejection.The Leupold MK4 one piece base I had was like cut out like that.

I use nothing but Picatinney style one piece bases as this style gives you more room/spacing to mount rings.

Also depending on the two piece base screw holes, you have to be careful and make sure you have the front and rear bases aligned.
