OKAY so im getting a bit frustrated with my 10/22... im seriously about to throw it in the trash, maybe use it as a club on the gophers this year!

First with my factory barrel.... stovepipes and horrible accuracy, put on a near new hammer forged... better accuracy but still stovepipes, then a stainless muzzleweight... great accuracy great cycling...then i sold that (didnt like the black rec. and stainless barrel combo).... back to hammer forged barrel again.

this is where the EVEN more so annoying problem came in .... i replaced the extractor with a tactical innovations to ward off the stove piping. reassembled the thing took it out along with my new .17hmr today and nearly EVERY single shot would not feed all the way into the chamber. the bolt would close half way and stop dead in its tracks.

last week i picked up 2 brand new factory rotary mags along with my well used original rotary mag and my BC steel lips 25 round and ALLLL of the mags had the same **** problem! and also every round in the mag had 2 gouges from the bolt on it...

barrel was thoroughly cleaned before re installing.

what could be my problem?

PLEASE help.

Geez thats no good, I have no advice for you but will be watching for updates incase my new unfired 10/22 has issues.

First of all... you shoulda kept the stainless muzzle weight I sold you... I told you that it was a great barrel. Second, you don't say what kind of hammer forged barrel you are using??? If it has a Bentz or Match chamber and you are using CCI loads, you will have problems. Have you scrubbed and/or polished the chamber? Try "soft lapping" with a bore snake and JB Paste... smear JB on the first 8" of the snake and in the bristles... make ten passes throught the barrel... clean with Bore Shine (or similar)... then do ten more passes with JB, clean again, then ten more with JB and a final cleaning... go to the range with some Winchester, Fedeeral or AE bulk or Blazers... see what the gun will do. Good Luck.

i also wanna add this picture... in my opinion it looks like the extractor is not letting the round up high enough to sit in the bolt, therefor ramming the round into the lip of the chamber, i did a nice slow hand feed with a flashlight (and safety on of course)... how can i fix this?

its a ruger target barrel, and i was using federals and blazers...

The extractor will often "pivot" the casing on extraction, so what you are seeing may or may not be a problem... it could also be a bolt face issue... check the bolt face and see if there is a burr on the edge of the bullet seating recess... does the same problem happen with all of your magazines? Did you have the same problems with both Federal AND Blazers?

yupp all mags and both ammos, the extractor just catches the rim before the case seats fully in the bolt, i dont know what im doing wrong and its really frustrating :(

I have run into bolts with "burrs" or "crimping" at the mouth of the extrator slot, which impedes the function of the extractor... it could also be an improperly installed extractor or an imporperly indexed barrel... I agree with "Chaser" on RFC, the VQ extractor is the best... and we have used them all... we have switched all of our guns to the VQ. Good Luck.

I had a kid extractor in mine and I am having lots of problems with it. So I bought the and the VQ extractor and installed it. Going to try it out next weekend. Hopefully i can get my 10/22 to cycle with the marauder mag or the rotary mag.

I would try loosening off your barrel bit and make sure that the extractor slots are square to the extractor and not forcing the bolt down onto the cartridge while chambering. Remove the mag and take a flashlight and look in the chamber from below (thru mag slot) and see if the extractor is making contact. Manipulate the bolt slowly by hand, and you do not need a round to see it happening.

It may not be the problem, but worth to check. If it is, loosen the front v block bolts and rotate your barrel until the extractor no longed hit the barrel.

I had a similar problem with a marlin... I know, different guns, but bear with me. The bottom of the bolt was very sharp and would hang up on the following round in the mag when it was closing. If your bolt is gouging the rounds in the mag, this might be your problem. The bolt could actually be digging into the following round enough to stop it from closing. The stovepipes are usually a result of poor feedlips or sharp chambers, are you using hollowpoints?

odd, I have purchased 2 10/22's (ok, one is an SR-22 but we are splitting hairs here) and have found that both of them preformed flawlessly out of the box. Only thing I have done so far is put the auto bolt release upgrades in. Good luck to you sir!

Marks on the bottom of case? I put the ejecter in upside down in my 10/22 once and that is exactly what happened to mine.

Just a shot in the dark

Thanks guys, I replaced the tac inc spring back to factory one and problem seems to be gone. Guess I'll know when I fire it next

Since you have the TAC INC extractor out, try a couple light passes with a fine file on the inside of the "hook" and then try it again... it might not have been seating properly or deeply enough under the rim.

I had to do the same thing with my VQ extractor ... the spring they sent with it was too soft, so I've been using the OEM Ruger one and haven't had any problems since.

I made a mistake. I installed a Power Custom titanium extractor from Hical. I hope its better than the crappy kid extractor.

Oh ok, we'll let me know your results, I bought a brand new tac inc one from a very nice
Cgn'r. So if the spring doesn't solve my problem I'm may just try to modify it or order that one if you have luck.

Take a stone and round off the lower corner of the extractor.

Add a new Op Handle/Recoil Spring assembly if problem persists.
