Well there's your problem - improper bullet selection. Next time try a .310 round ball lubed with Alox on top of 6-8 gr of Unique with a wad of Dacron on top to hold the powder against the primer for about 600 FPS and you'll get about the same results as a .22.

There is no logical argument for the .223 over the .308 if you're looking to do more with one caliber...

the round ball load wouldn't take larger game or be good for defence though, One load for the rest of your life remember...

You have to take weight, quantity able to be carried, and resources required to make more into account.

Logistically, .308 is harder to justify for the modest gains in power at realistic hunting and self defence distances.

Just try humping 500 or 1000 rounds of 308 around for a day, let alone a week, or months, and you will understand the advantage of .223

Yeah,I have, and mudgunner49 covered half your problem in the first sentence of his answer.

To expand on that, not just the wrong bullet, but a crappy choice all in, at that velocity. Deer get shot and killed with less energy than that. You really think it was an appropriate use of survival resources?

For small game with a big bullet, you pretty much need to beat slingshot velocities. That bullet cruising along at half that would have been messy enough, and very effective. A round ball at 500 fps works really well in my .308. Or learn to aim for the bits that are not food.

Actaully as the OP i meant 1 load in either calibre, for survival.... Choose a load in either calibre which you'd be comfortable using for everything

Wasn't meant to be, it was more of 223 vs everything 30 cal and heavier, at least I should have said that.

That said, I love my 30 cals, but .223 fit the bill better in my opinion.
