Ontario Skeet Association membership $15, NSSA membership ~$50-60/year or 6 year or life membership! Some great shoots to get started. Start by doing some smaller shots, like the Oshawa 200 or Knotty Pine 200. These are 200 targets events in any gauge!
Skeet shooting is done in 12, 20, 28 and 410 gauges, plus doubles event for a high over all score of 400 or 500 targets!
if you choose to compete, do you need to have all four gauges/calibres with you? Do all the comps have pump action divisions or catagories? I'm newer to skeet and am improving quickly but I'm only shooting a 12g pump. If I were to join the nssa or ossa and register some shoots would I be able to compete? Do I need to be shooting steady 25's to even bother?
You do not need to shoot all 4 gauges to compete. Many shooters (perhaps most shooters) start off shooting 12ga only. Your best bet is always to register ahead of time and let the organizers know your intentions. If you are new, then tell them so that they can help you out with the details.
You will need to be a member of the NSSA and OSSA to compete, however the first year membership in both organizations is complementary (and on the chance whomever you are talking to is unaware of that, get in touch with me and I'll set the situation right).
You don't need to be shooting 25s to compete.... (you need to shoot 25s to win though). Shooters are classed based on average. I usually tell people the rule of thumb is 20/25. When you can start consistently breaking 20+ you will fit in well.
There are no pump action divisions/categories; you will have to compete with those using semi's or O/U's.
Feel free to reply here or hit me with a PM if you want any details on competing, or if you need help getting in touch with the organizers of any tournaments in Ontario (or Canada for that matter.)
