Because we all know the bears in Ontario are insignificant compared to the monsters in all other provinces, I am directing this at just those how have hunted bear in Ontario.

Would you consider a 30/30 under 50 yards sufficient to take a bear?

I have a messed up shoulder and cannot see using my 45/70, or, shotgun with slugs. If I get the chance I would like to get a bear but not at the expense of the level of pain the larger calibers can inflict on me right now.

Your thoughts are appreciated.

The .30-30 at under 50 yards will shoot right through. Black bears are not really tough animals but the legends have made them tough. My line of work has caused me to have to shoot numerous black bears ranging from 100lbs to 400 lbs all were cleanly killed with 12 gauge 00 buck loads. If you want to stop it right there shoot through the shoulders that will anchor the bruin and avoid a tracking job. The .30-30 will work just fine on ANY black bear, Ontario or otherwise.

regards, Darryl

I would not call the one I shot near Alban Ontario in 1975 insignificant weighed in at 378lb dressed, and what about the large bears coming off the Bruce Peninsula. Weighing in at over 400lbs. I would use as much power as I could accurately. Just my opinion!

@243 win , shot twice, cause the bear was dumb, going around and around in circles to find out what has hit him. Droped right there and end up on my wall.Whatever was left of it , we eat it at the camp in seven days=CUPlSH
That was two years ago and we searched , looked and baited and waited all season last year,no relatives of him showed, I belive they all know now that 243win is not to mess with

but are they really ? (the ones below where on my bait) and yes I would use a 30-30 in those conditions.

To my fellow Ontario Hunters. My opening comments were in jest. I know that our bears of the same species are comparable to the other provinces. My jest was due to conversations that a 45/70 was not enough to take out any bear.

My attempt at humor has failed. I apologize. I am glad to hear that you agree a 30/30 under the right conditions will do the job. I will be using mine this year if I get a bear into my feeding station.

I shot my first bear at 16 with a 30 30. It was around 200lbs, and dropped where it was.

I have shot 3-4 with my compound bow, have not lost any, so if a sharp stick works, your 30 30 should be fine.

Look up the LeverRevolution bullets, with a pointed soft tip. I think they add at least 100fps and offer superior expansion.

Good 4 U Trevor - finally taking the plunge into bear hunting. You may get hooked on it like some others here. Today the fun starts at first light!

Where there is a cub a sow is usually nearby also. Be ready to meet mamma bear.

I don't know what's hitting mine as I haven't got the tree cam out. It's cleaning out everything though.
