Hi guys,

Myself and a couple guys in my gang are considering bow hunting for moose this year. Does anyone else here bow hunt moose in Ontario, AND if so, how lucky are you with the tag draw?

I've heard that for every 2 guys in the draw, you will get an adult tag. The regs don't seem to say that though...

Any input?

It basically depends on what WMU you apply in. Around Thunder Bay in areas 13, 21A I believe it takes about 3-4 applicants to get a guaranteed tag, although the further east you go the tags get scarcer and the number of group members gets higher.

The information you are looking for is available in the hunting regulations under the moose hunting section.

Dont get sucked into applying for a cow tag.

I know there is a hundred guys on here that will tell you they can call a cow in and have it eat out of their hand. But I hunt in the real world, not on the internet and in the real world its almost impossible to call a cow, let alone call it into bow range.

I'm pretty well versed with the system and the regs. The reason I ask is because a guy at my work who bow hunts says you can get a tag with 2 guys, no matter the guarenteed group size, as him an his father have been successful in the draw with 2 guys.
They hunt matawatchan area.... so I imagine around 38 somewheres...

A lot will depend on the WMU you want to hunt. The further west you go the better your chances of drawing a bull tag. Some units have a lot of cow tags so it is not hard to get a cow tag as a second choice or for someone in Pool 2.

In all the years that we have been moose hunting with bows we have only shot one calf and it was a matter of being in the right spot. My buddy had enough time to take his camera out to take a picture of the cow and calf before realizing they were coming to him. With that said we would not go archery hunting if all we had was a cow tag.
