So I am new to this, I have my RPAL and I am wondering what the easiest process is to get an exemption to purchase handguns.

I have been told the easiest way is to get a trappers license and I can do that because I genuinely have an interest in being a trapper. I am just unsure what the process would be.

To give some extra context I don’t know a trapper and I don’t know anyone who has a handgun who could lend me one for the purposes of the paperwork for an ATC

Any help would be much appreciated

Good luck with that, it’s hard enough to get a trap line. Without the line your chances are less than zero. Natives get precedent when allocating available lines

Easiest way is to move somewhere else, as someone else mentioned. Otherwise, spend your time learning how to shoot a rifle or shotgun. You came too late to the party for handguns.

Here’s what I’m considering:
1. Win the lottery, a bit more than 10 mil should do it
2. Get involved in a political party and spend a few years and many dollars getting elected as an MP
3. Sell my soul and health to build “political capital” on the hill, whatever that means.
4. Make a run for leadership of said party and win
5. Conduct a successful election campaign and win a comfortable majority of seats
6. Repeal the Canada firearms act, certain sections of the criminal code, strike down relevant order in councils.

I reckon this foolproof plan should get me a handgun in 15-20 years.

What do you guys think? See any major problems with this?

Yes, there will be no gun stores left standing in 20 years

The “freeze” won’t last forever. Either they’ll all get taken away or it will end one day same way the long gun registry did. Don’t let anyone tell you that you came to the party too late because everyone is in the same boat here.

You can’t just say you’re interested in being a trapper. They have registration and licensing for what they do and you can’t just apply like a hunting licence. You have to take over an established trap line from someone who is getting out of the business and you have to spend a minimum number of days per year on it. You’d be better off trying out for the Olympic team. For now I’d recommend joining a range that has rental guns available to use

Find a club that does ISSF disciplines, compete. Yes you'd need to travel to a bunch of competitions. Once you manage a full season with a borrowed gun, the cfo will let you buy your own. That's all I know as I'm on the selling end of it...

Read the laws. No exemption for trapper…your dream end here for now.

One of our Club members has been in a league for the past couple years, and with his help, we have started a "satellite" group at our club. From what I understand, once you have competed and qualified, you will be allowed to buy a "suitable" pistol, .22 LR only. If you remain active, you can "upgrade" (example, you have a Ruger No. 3, you could buy a High Standard or Pardini or another considered more competitive). While I am participating, I already have a beautiful High Standard Sharp-shooter, a pistol that is a better shooter than I am. As I get older, in a few years, mine will be available for sale to a fellow competitor. My other handguns will likely go to auction for export... Except maybe my two Norincos which are not allowed in the USA. Thank you Liberals. :(
