I applied for my 2012 tag and want to get a discussion thread going. How was your 2011 hunt if you drew a tag? Anyone spotted any this spring or summer? Thanks for any interest.

For elk, I applied for WMU 60, harvest area 4, hunt code 120 as my first choice. I believe that a second choice is meaningless but selected WMU 57, harvest area 2, hunt code 101 in any event. Anyone have any history or sightings in these harvest areas? Obviously drawing an elk tag is slightly more possible than the Lotto, but I did draw a NM Oryx tag in only six years of trying. I am told some persons try for a lifetime. Thanks for any elk info.

If you ever got the tag in WMU60. PM me. We got some 200 acres around hwy62 north of Madoc. Not sure you can get a tag let alone finding an elk there but here's my input for any one who applied. We applied ( 6 guys ) last year for that area and you know the history, got no tags no sh!tt. Even we got our deer hunt screwed as we rattle up the land. This year no one apply from our group, so no prob if you get the tag - Biggs

I just received notification that I drew a cow elk tag for WMU 60, harvest area 4. I had a line on a friend's hunt camp but it may not be in this harvest area. Can anyone offer any assistance in locating a property within harvest area 4? Thanks for any help.

Thanks for all the input and PM's so far. My plan is to contact the MNR to see if they have up to date info of the location of a herd in WMU 60, HA 4. Next I go to the Ontario Publications office for topo maps. Any know the map numbers for this area? As a real long shot, a computer friend suggested Google maps- apparently in some areas, the resolution is good enough to see a large animal but I have no idea if this is true or ???. I am starting to get really excited about this project. I will post info as I proceed- Virtual Elk Hunt??

Go to the nearst Ct in your hunt area that sells ammo. Hang around for 30 minutes and you will have all the info you need. After that, you will still need to knock on some doors, but you will know which doors you need to knock on.

Here is the August 20 update on my elk plans. My telephone contacts with the MNR and Ontario agriculture have not been really successful. Essentially I left a number of messages on voice mail systems. Maybe someone will get back to me, maybe not.

I have posted messages at the Haliburton County Marksmen Club (of which I am a member) and at the Milcun range- hoping for persons with either WMU 60 HA4 property or contacts. I do have access to a friends hunt camp which while located in the area is reported as "elk free".

My hunting partner is attempting to post on the OFHA website. Our efforts continue and any additional help would be appreciated. Thanks.

What someone i know did last year spend a weekend in the WMU and start knocking on some doors. its the BEST WAY. Just say its Elk hunting only. if they want a peice of the meat you will be more then willing to share it.

Feeding an Elk my apple on some property in Boulter yesterday...Wouldn't be a very sporting hunt!

Here is my August 27 update for those who are following this virtual elk hunt. First to Captonion, your bad boy would be safe from me. My tag is a cow in WMU 60, HA4. However if you can send one of his girlfriends south, it would be appreciated.

My hunting partner and myself spent Saturday knocking on doors and posting the following add in Legions, Grocery stores, Lumber stores, Co-ops, gun shops etc and speaking to the local folks. We covered the area from Bancroft south to Coe Hill between hwy 62 and hwy 28.

Everyone we spoke to said the elk were north and east of our location. Our add is
"Elk Hunters Need Help- Two responsible senior hunters have drawn a 2012 cow elk tag in WMU 60 Harvest Area 4 and need help in locating a hunting area. This HA runs north from Madoc to Bancroft on the west side of Hwy 62. The southern boundary is Hwy 7 and the western boundary is Hwy 28. If anyone has access to property in this area or knows anyone who has suffered elk damage, we would appreciate info or leads. The season starts Sept 17 and ends Sept 29. The hunt camp that we have access to, is within the area but is without any elk spotted for years. Please call...."

I have now spoken to a MNR biologist who confirms that most of the elk are further north (where Captonion has been feeding them apples!). Apparently there are no elk with radio collars in WMU 60, HA 4 That does not mean there are no elk, only that the main herds are elsewhere. He reported that a cow was killed near the Hwy 7/62 intersection last week. That area is considerably south of where we canvassed so we intended to focus our door knocking there next week.

We would again appreciated any assistance or leads from fellow CGNers.

After a day of door knocking we went to the Kinmount range to confirm our rifles. My partner is using a Remington 700 270 with Barnes X bullets, myself a Remington 7600 in 35 Whelen with 250 grn Hornady Interlock handloads. I recently shortened the barrel on my Whelen and added a brake. I can report that accuracy was unaffected by the changes and remains excellent. Thanks for any help or leads.

Congrats on being drawn!

I'm zero for two years in the draw, but I plan to keep trying.

I've been applying in HA 5, which contains the original release site, and has the highest proportion of Crown land.

Good luck on the hunt!

Here is my September 10 update for those following this vitural elk hunt. I have received a few call backs from MNR and Agriculture, but so far, no solid leads. Door knocking has had a similar result. I received a couple of faint leads from an IPSC shoot at my club in Kinmount. At a Peterborough retirement reception, a firefighter friend has offered to post the sign that I previously provided in an earlier post at a few of the Peterborough fire stations. The hunt starts September 17 and concludes the 29, so there is still some time left, although I am starting to get a little concerned. Luckily, my hunting partner and myself are retired so we can respond at short notice if a solid lead becomes available. Thanks for any info or leads.

Congrats to you, and good luck! We will keep applying for a bull tag until we get one, or they close the season, or we die! We have an archery bull moose tag for a Northern unit, so we are not really hurting too badly!

Captonion's posts of cow elk in WMU 58 are CRUEL to a hunter with a cow elk tag in WMU 60! Cruel but cool- I hope they are not the only elk, I see this year.
