The Ontario Fall black bear season opens in less than one month. Anyone else getting the bear barrel out? Popcorn is my favorite bait. What's yours?

Cheapest dog food money can buy. Dump some molasses and/or deep fryer grease on it. Works like a charm. Another awesome tip I heard and have used with great success is pop a bag of microwave popcorn right before heading out. Dump the hot bag of popcorn on the bait when you arrive at your stand. They can't resist the fresh popcorn smell

Meat.

Hooked a friend up with 45 gallon drums of peanut butter tailings. We will see.

You are a good friend. I know bears love peanut butter :). My wife is a fanatic about expiry dates on food, so I have gotten near full jars of peanut butter. Smear it on tree trunks around your bait barrel. Drives the bears & coons crazy!

old fryer oil... splash it on some leaves on a bush.....doesnt take too much....

Fryer oil is great to pour on the ground around your bait barrel! The animals get it on their feet & create trails going in & out of your bait. Works great to point other bears to your spot. I also like to hand bait for the birds to fight over. The sounds of jays & other birds bring in other animals.

I use a shaker bait with dog food and Molasses chained to a tree. I add grease in front of the barrels on the ground and spray the trees around the bait. There is not much I have not tried in 35 years of baiting...

I used 4 loaves of bread, two packs of raspberry jello crystals and two jugs of pancake syrup. Throw 2 loaves in, sprinkle the crystals on them, one jug of syrup and then throw the second two loaves in, crystals and syrup. Tasty treat for them. I can hardly wait to get out on the 15th with my 10 year old son.

I like popcorn too. Its light to carry in they love it and they cant just grab a chunk and run off. In my experience they wont hit a bait if the food has spoiled so thats why i dont use meat or anything. Dump that stuff outside the barrel along with some aunt Jamima's or cheap soda's

I hunt oat fields 99% of the time. The farmers plant the bait then want the bears gone. Makes for some big and good tasting bears and the good relationship with the farmers opens up a lot more opportunities for other species later in the season like ducks, geese and coyotes.

I can hardly wait til Thursday. I went out Sunday and checked my cam. I had one photo but it wasn't real clear. There seemed to be lots of activity around the area. I set up 2 portable stands for my son and I and re-baited. I'm going to try and freshen it up tomorrow and that should be good til Thursday.

I stopped baiting when the spring season was cancelled... I hunt the cuts and berries now. I have a couple boss bears patterned right now... If the berries hold they'll be in the freezer in just a few days...

I had two different bears on the trail camera tonight. When we got there, the bait barrel was gone. I found it about 100 yards away, empty. My son and I hunted right til dark but no action. I think it was too windy. The mosquitoes were brutal. Luckily we had bug jackets. We'll try again next week.

Hey Slooshark1, I've never used one, but lots of guys swear by the Thermacell product for getting rid of mosquitos... Or, do you not use it to prevent alerting the bear to any scent?

Cheers
Jay
P.S. GOOD LUCK, post pics when you get one!

I don't bear hunt myself, but have heard that there are many around this summer. Weve had one break into the camp last years and again this year. I may give it a try this fall.
