Ontario Fall bear season.

Are you using an ATV to bring bait? If so, drive the ATV right up to the bait site and make lot's of noise when you top it up. The bears will start coming in right after you leave. When you go to hunt, bring some fresh bait, make noise when filling it up and get into your stand and wait. They'll come.

Thanks!, I will try that as I do use the ATV to bring the bait to the site.

A guiding service/outfitter that has the BMA (Black Bear Management Area) has exclusive rights to bring in NON resident hunters in the area. This means he is the only outfitter that can have non residents hunt in this area. All Ontario hunters can hunt anywhere on crown land, even in his area. An Ontario resident can even set up shop and sell bear hunts to other Ontario residents in his area.

Yes, that's the term they used -BMA. My son and I just returned from hunting at the link in my earlier post. Many, many hours in a stand from Saturday to Tues night. We didn't see a bear, and none of the stands were were provided access to were even hit by bears during the time we were there. Very disappointed, it was intended to be my son's kind of 16th year thing and his first big game. Returning home empty handed was a bit disheartening. Hey, it's hunting though, right?

Accomodations were not what I was expecting, I'll leave it at that. And while we know nothing about bear hunting so our lack of success could be due to that, there were some very experienced hunters at the camp as well, with the same success - not even a sighting. They weren't happy either, and while they were very polite about it, they had a long list of details as to why the lack of success wasn't the hunters fault (nor did they feel it was the blueberries' fault either).

I guess next up we'll try moose. Gotta be moose out there, right?

Well after spending countless hours in a treestand, I accepted the fact that I was not going to get a bear over my bait this year. I was just tired of pouring money into my bait barrel, plus all the time that it takes, is just too much for my current schedule. I went to our deer hunting area yesterday to check my trail cameras and move a treestand. I was walking a moss covered ridge on my way to one of my cameras when this bear jumped up onto a parallel ridge about 40 yards away. I quickly shouldered my 1886 and dropped him in his tracks. I had my dad and stepsister's husband come out to help me at the kill site. We gutted him, skinned him, cut him in half and loaded him into back packs. We had about a kilometre hike back to the boat. I guess it was payback for my dad because last year he shot a deer about that far back. What a great day.

Congratulations, Slooshark1! Great looking bear!

I went for a bowhunt a few days ago but we bumped a bear off the bait on our way in. Got harrassed by giant mosquitos and pine beetles the whole time.

Good shooting Slooshark1 - glad you got one. That 1886 sure did it's job since you pointed it right. Great pics.

How many pounds live weight do you think? Still huntin for one myself. Been a tough year for bear huntin. Not much action though one in the 300 lb plus class I believe visited one of my sites at least once. Just no regularity. Now the berries are gone maybe I'll connect.

Congrats Slooshark1, let me know when your in my neighbourhood.

Hunting has been really weird this year, we had a big boom in new farmers in the area, with the increased density of oat fields instead of having 10-15 bears frequenting a field they are spread out and there's only 2-3 per field, really pays to be mobile with no stands or anything and have permission in many fields. Here is the bigger one of the season so far. Rem Sendero in 7mm RUM, 140gr Barnes ttsx pushed pretty hard. (This is not a staged pic, she was scared ####less but I was happy she at least came out to see it)
