I currently have my non-restricted and restricted PAL, and would like to get my Ontario Outdoors Card. Can I challenge the exam without having to take the course? I am hoping to avoid having to do the course, since I already own firearms and have my friends Ontario hunter book to study. If it's possible to challenge the exam, who should I contact?

the hunting test has more on it than just hunting ethics. it has skinning, and survival, and identifying deer elk moose and such on it..
i got mine last year 2 days before hunting season lol. i was glad to take it ive gone hunting on my own property before (not deer but for other small critters) and there was a ton of stuff i didnt know.

I'm pretty sure the hunter's safety course is mandatory. Chances are, unless you're well versed, you stand a good chance of not passing.
As aries mentioned, it spans alot of ground. Alot of species stuff. Can you identify all north american ducks? If you answered "no", sign up for the course.

Hmmmm.... I am going to look into finding a course nearby. Sounds like doing the full course may be a good option, as some things on it may be new to me. The firearms portion will be a review, but that's ok by me. I will also try to contact the instructor prior to it, just to let him know I have my PAL. I'm sure there must have been other people in the same boat as me.
most hunting courses in ontario now are a 2 day course. first day they do the PAL course. the next day (next weekend or so) they do the hunting course.
so there isnt a hell of a lot of gun related stuff on the hunting test. just how to climb over a fence, what bullet size for what critter type thing.
the other 80% or so of the test is survival, field dressing, critter identification.
its tougher to find just strictly the hunting course and may have to pay upwards of $120 for just the hunting course.

Since they split the hunting licenses into gun and bow only sub-classes, most of the firearms stuff is out.
The way it worked with our course was if you didn't have a PAL and wanted the gun hunting license, then you had to pass the firearms handling. Otherwise, there was no firearms practical in the hunting course.
