They are kind of a pain in the butt to figure out. But maybe thats cause I'm used to the BC regs. Where can I figure out what areas I can hunt withh what calibers? My brother-in-law has a bit of bush on his farm but has heard that the area is shot and slugs only. Any directions on where to fiind this info would be appreciated.

The shot and slug thing usually only applies to deer hunts (if it applies at all). Most of Ontario you can use whatever the heck you want to use, its only portions of the south that are restricted to slug guns for deer. Other things, like yotes, can be shot with a rifle. In some of these areas, only calibres less then .275 can be used, but once again, its a relatively small portion of the province. Another consideration is local bylaws, which wont be in the regs.

Where does he live, it may be easier if we know that info?

Local by-laws are probably not online...contact the municipality and request copies of any by-laws concerning hunting or firearms discharge.

I beleive all areas south of the hwy 401 is shotgun only for all species.

No such law.

The .275 calibre restriction is for small game only in certain parts of southern Ontario. Page 71 of 2009 regs.

Restrictions for big game are laid out in the regs by way of each WMU.

The other thing that comes up once in awhile is some municipal bylaws.

On page 80 it has a list of M.N.R. offices to call. At the top is a 1-800 number as well as a e-mail address.
The staff will be happy to assist with your questions of game and rifle/shotgun and loads to use.
