I called the MNR tonight and got a surplus tag (bull) to WMU 16C. They only had a few openings and all of the tags were way up North, so it's kinda take it or leave it situation...
Obviously, there is no way I can go there to scout the area, so I'd like to know if any of you are familiar with that WMU. I will take my ATV but no boat.
Anybody wants to call the MNR for a tag, the line is open till 9:00 PM (EST) tonight only. 1-800-363-3730
Please PM me if you don't want to publish your secret location. :D

I use to supervise a forestry operation up in Armstrong. As you said, probably best to leave the boat as most of the roads restrict access to the lakes via road. Most roads are however open to travel for hunting. There are 2 main logging roads, one east and one west. I saw quite a few moose to the west of Armstrong, towards Wabakimi Park. That road goes for approx 60-80km then ends at the park. The road to the east is quite long and actually goes past the Jackfish River which is the WMU boundary.

My operators were from Whitesands First Nation and they often got their moose close enough to the operation to use the skidder to pull it out and load it up. One of the few perks of the job.

Lots of logging on both roads however I think they haven't cut up there for a few years now because the industry has crapped out so most cuts will be atleast 2 years old (lots of regeneration).

Before you head north off 11/17 make sure you have lots of gas. No gas stations until armstong except for at Gull Bay but they are hit and miss as far as being open.

Good luck.

Call the Thunder Bay MNR office and they will give you the road access info. Some roads are no access, some are accessible to a certain KM point and some are open, but no hunting near certain lakes.

Gotta protect the outfitters.
