Ontario Moose tags ...

I think what we are likely to see is more areas with a "calf draw"
If there were some way that each camp got only one calf tag, that might make a difference.
It would allow the boys to go hunting, and cut the crap.
A camp not far north of us shot I think it was five calves in one season. You do that kind of crap, and the adult numbers are going to plummet.

$56.83 per licence... That's for a calf tag essentially and you get entered into the adult draw...

8 guys = $454.64 in the provincial coffers...

IMHO there is no way they will give up that revenue & that is a HUGE part of the problem.

And salarguy, exactly 1 calf moose has been seen & shot in the 5 years I have been part of the camp. Guys put their time in hunting, it's not a drinking/card playing camp.

Something has to be done...

Cheers

I fully agree Jay. It sure sounds to me like you don't have the moose population to keep up with the licence quota. I'm thinking Newfoundland is doomed as well if MNR don't start counting more often and reacting to the counts. I think our system is just OK with bull/calf and either ### with an ever decreasing human population. However poaching and the huge non-resident licence quota in some choice management areas is reducing the big breeders at too fast a rate. The calf draw can help out as long as the planning and enforcement is up to scratch. I take a calf every two years even though my licence reads bull/calf. My days of paunching huge bulls and carrying them are over. I just don't have the back or the teeth lol for it.
