Staff: Staff will receive $100 for your effort plus KMs. You must be there from 0700 to March Out. Staff will be afforded time to shoot as well. More AROs will be assigned as needed.
Parking: park in the designated parking lot, form 3 neat rows. 1 row along the trees, 2 rows in the middle. Leave the lane along the ranges open. If you park badly I will have you move your vehicle.
Lunch: pack a lunch we're going to keep driving through all day. There is no time to leave the range. Water is a good idea too. Snacks, so on.

Shoot all or any of the events you like, the match fee is for the day. As long as it’s safe and legal (and an apprrved caliber), it’s good to go. You are welcome to bring different firearms for each event.
We’ll do a match briefing before each match starts, but you need to help with set up and clean up. Be ready to shoot 15 minutes before the events you plan to shoot. Ready means loaded mags, holstered pistols. I will finish the briefing, and we will start shooting. If you are not ready, we will go without you.
I think most people will shoot all the events for the day, but if you don’t want to, that’s ok. You clean up your lane before you leave. If you don’t clean up, you will not be invited back. All spent cases are to be picked up and taken home, if you don’t want it leave it for me, I like brass. If you leave me non-brass cartridge cases, I will not invite you back. Food waste is to be taken home and disposed of. All other garbage is to be picked up and disposed of in a garbage bag, and the garbage bag will be placed in the dumpster. As in past years, I will provide paper scoresheets and match cheat sheets, with the load out and course of fire.

Note the caliber restrictions on the range license.

Review the old rule book, It’ll basically be the same. If there are issues with the legacy rule book, we will sort them out at the range, and the rule book will be amended. 22LR is fine, pistols with optics are fine.

Round Count: 88 “rifle”, 22 pistol

Service Pistol
Review the DCRA rule book and course of fire. I will modify it slightly to suit our timing and range. We won't do all the matches and it will be slightly different.

Rifle Marksmanship Match
Bring any rifle, any calibre (that we can use at Langemark). I cooked his up over COVID and ran a bunch of matches at a gun glub.
We’ll shoot this from 100m after things are mostly cleaned up. Then pick up rifle brass and prepare to depart.

Aug 27 CQC Match Results

I am thrilled to announce the scores from our first CQC match since 2020. With changes to our ability to use or legally owned and registered firearms over the past two years, I have been anxiously waiting to see what people would bring to CQC instead of the venerable AR15. On August 27 we held a match with 19 people in attendance on Langemark Range at CFB Borden. CQC combines the use of carbines and pistols in close range target engagements and focuses on the fundamentals of marksmanship in a service conditions event. Competitors carry their carbine, pistol, and magazines to engage in a string of fire and then score and patch their targets. CQC is incredibly safe with every shooter having a safety person, and several range officers overseeing the shooting relay. Targets are engaged in snap, and rapid exposures. Carbines are unloaded and slung during pistol shooting. Most but not all matches are shot from the standing alert position. A CQC match requires 88 rounds of carbine ammunition, and 22 rounds of pistol ammunition. It appears that the majority of competitors are using semi-automatic carbines, and pistol calibre carbines were less common than carbines in rifle calibres.

I have also developed a course of fire for Service Pistol based on the Service Pistol matches that the Dominion of Canada Rifle Association (DCRA) runs as part of the National Service Conditions Championship (NSCC). I am pleased with the turn-out on short notice and the enthusiastic support of our friends from the Royal Canadian Military Institute Pistol Club who were out in force for the August 27 match. Service Pistol focuses on applying the fundamental principles of marksmanship using a pistol in various scenarios from 5 to 35 yards, the majority being 10 yards. To complete a service pistol match requires about 200 rounds of pistol ammunition depending on how far a shooter advances during "The Last One Standing" match, which becomes sudden elimination should a competitor miss the scoring zone of a target. Since we are not holstering loaded pistols, there is no requirement to hold a holster certification. We do expect a level of proficiency with your pistol. While the current Government has taken steps to stop or reduce the importation of legal pistols, and a freeze of ownership has been announced and is making its way through Parliament, ORA members and their guests are still able to enjoy competing with our pistols. It was an honour to go head-to-head with The Duck for "Last One Standing" match. We shoot 40 rounds before The Duck dropped a shot, and I was able to claim victory on that match.

Way cool. Thanks for getting this fun back after a couple of years of OIC and pandemic. It’s a welcome (metaphor warning) breath of fresh air…..

What are the popular long guns in use? Hoping to make a match or two next year but none of the suitable rifles I own are of approved calibre for the range.

This was my first match.
Amazing.
Great squad thanks to Sam and Brian for showing me the ropes.
Big thanks to the RSO Dave, Kris for the scoring and Match director Andrew.
Oh ya thanks to Jim for getting me hooked in another shooting discipline.
Looking forward to coming out to more matches

The most common rifles we've had out this year are by far the WK-180s (we've had a few other AR-180 makes), always a few Tavors, the occasional T97 and in pistol cal carbine, the Ruger PCC and FX-9.

Thanks for coming out, Furlan. Glad you had a good match, see you next week? :)

How are the WK180 standing up? I was beside another shooter on the line with a Gen 1 a few years back at a Sporting rifle match and the rifle broke 20 rounds in. Hopefully the bugs are getting worked out?

I used a Ruger carbine in 9mm as the long gun. It works well, but it is not quite as ergonomically friendly as a AR-15.

For example, when changing mags with a AR-15, the right hand drops the mag while the left hand is reaching for a fresh one. With a PC, the mag is dropped with the left hand, either before or after it reaches for a fresh one. This is an important issue when shooting against the clock. I do not "sprint" well during the advance and shoot stage. "Waddle" would be more like it, so I have less time than most to shoot and change mags.

Surprising to me, is that the recoil with the 9mm in the rapid fire is greater than with the 223 AR. My rapid fire requires me to shoot and re-aim each shot. With my AR I would aim and then fire 5 shots.

I used a Hi-Point in 9mm for the first two matches. It works quite well. I can drop mag with right hand, because the mag release is like a pistol. The only problem is that in modified prone, we are holding the carbine sideways. Gravity does not drop the mag and there is no spring tension to pop it out. The 9mm mag is flush with the base of the pistol grip and there is nothing to grab to strip the mag, while holding the release button. The 40 cal version (which I have also used) has a prominent extended base plate on the mag, which makes it easier to strip. Next year I will try the 40 cal Hi-Point and compare it to the 9mm Ruger.

In my opinion, the AR-15 is the perfect target rifle for these competitions. Everything else is less.

My pistol has an optic. This has improved my pistol scores a lot. My old eyes have cataracts, so until I get the surgery, the iron sights just don't cut it for me. But it takes practice to be able to see the red dot quickly after the draw.
