Ontario rules for bringing son hunting ?

A correction to my previous post...since posting that, I have discovered that the CFO has placed restrictions and conditions over and above the Firearms Act on young hunters. While the FA holds that a young hunter with a Minors Permit can be in unsupervised legal possession of a firearm, the CFO has placed supervisory conditions upon this. The young hunter must be supervised for some time (from what I was shown, I think it is a minimum of 1 year) before the CFO will allow him/her to solo hunt with a firearm...in other words, the CFO is not recognizing the legitimacy of the Minors Permit until such time as his conditions are met.

I can confirm this. My son who just turned 13 passed the CFSC a year ago and the Hunter Safety just last month here in Ontario. He has been issued a Minor's POL which allows him possession of a firearm for purposes of target shooting, BUT the kind CFO has put the restrictions on as you state above.

Once he turns 15, he can get a full Outdoors card and will get a POL without the restrictions and will be able to legally hunt unsupervised (we'll see about that!) and get his own tags.

Taking him deer hunting tomorrow for 4 days. Perhaps he will get a chance to shoot with the SKS I have brought along for him. :)
