Nothing, as long as that is what it actually is. I am not convinced that that is what happened however.

If that's what was going on, why leave them behind?

I can't help but feel like someone told the shooter you can use 300wm OR 300wby in the gun (apparently that works with 375h&h in a 375bee) ... Or he has guns in both calibers and done fkked up...

I'd bet bubba strolled into the LGS, asks for shells all fuddy like for his "300 magnum" and this os the result. Winchesters just the brand of shells dontcha know! More than once I've had small laugh at the expense of a non shooter when they say they shoot a "300" and are met with "which one?". "A 300!" They say.

I agree with ATR, those rounded shoulders are typically a Weatherby thing thus the very short neck:

.300 Weatherby Magnum Case length = 2.825"
.300 Winchester Magnum Case length = 2.62"

They don't, the ammo finds them.

And they toss the brass, too. That's how I found him. I found the brass and then saw the rifle it was coming from.

And then there was the guy shooting 30 ought 8 in his Rem 760 pump. Yes, 308 ammo in a 3006. Did it for years. Never wondered why the cases came out looking like rimless 444.

And the guy who shot 30-30 in a 32 Spl. Never bothered to look at the caliber stamp on the rifle. He had a reputation of being a terrible shot in the hunt camp. Never hit a thing.

I understand how the magnums would work, and the 30-30/32spl but how would a 308 that has neither a rim nor a belt work in a 3006? Is the case wide enough to get stuck or...?

I've heard of this happening quite a bit, Guys running full 8 round enblocs of 308 in a 30'06 garand before! I don't know exact details but apparently some garands had an adapter to 7.62x51 that would occasionally come out with a spent piece of brass and the shooter wouldn't notice until he looked at his brass. I believe it got posted here years ago.

Regarding 308 in 30-06 - I had read on internet that original design parameter for 7.62 was that it could be chambered and fired in military 30-06 rifles, if need be. The 7.62/308 shoulder is a nice snug fit in a 30-06 chamber, at that distance from the bolt face. I doubt that is coincidence, but could be...
